205 1.6 Gti Front Hubs Query?

Recommended Posts

Hi Chasps,

Anybody confirm for me please. The front hubs on my 1.6 GTI UK car [1990 ]....are they from lower spec 205's or are they the same as the 1.9 GTI ?

The reason i ask is that i have just fitted the 1.9 15 inch wheels with new tyres....195 x50 x15 [i wanted 185's but these were half the price ] and i had no problems fitting them.... until i looked at the drivers side front and noticed the tyre was outside the plastic moulding by approx. 10 to 15mm. The passenger side was flush with the moulding and was good.

So i am thinking that some previous owner has changed the hub for what ever reason and used a hub from one of our local Australian 205's onto my UK car.

PS: The 14" wheels fitted within the mouldings looking down on them- all good but harder to gauge the milimetres. The day prior i changed both front wheel bearings. I checked the offset of both front SMR 15" and were correct and the same.

Any thoughts appreciated. :}

1.6L GTi and 1.9L (DFZ) GTi are the same parts.

Mei.....thx for the link.

Peter....so let me get my head around this.....you are saying that a DFZ 1.9 hub from a 75 kw OZ Gti will be the same as my 1.6 hub?

The reason i ask is that in the link Mei so kindly supplied it says " the 1.6 gti hub flange is a bit of an oddity having a 10mm taller offset than either base model or the 1.9."

Base model would also include our Si ?

So in short all i have to do is change the hub to a 1987 to 1990 OZ Gti [75kw ] ???

One last query.....what do you think the existing hub is from thats causing the one wheel to be out by 10 to 15mm......an Si or 90kw GTI i am thinking.

Yes.

Si is different again. ie a "base" model hub as they call it the UK.

Panel damaged and/or bent?

Easy enough to check, measure your track and compare it to a DFZ GTi.

No panel damage/ or bent .... track all good too.

"So in short all i have to do is change the hub to a 1987 to 1990 OZ Gti [75kw ] ???" Is this what you are saying "yes" to Peter ? [as in your last post above ] confused.

Yes, but it seems illogical that it could be anything else than a 1.6L GTi (or DFZ GTi) hub on it. There are really only three possibilities:

1. 1.6L GTi hub

2. 1.9L (DKZ, D6C) GTi hub - it couldn't have this as the drive shaft splines are different

3. 1.6L Si hub - it couldn't have this unless it has a solid disc rotor fitted.

My guess is that your car is BENT!

could be a bent damper, or its possible it has a 1.9 disc one side on a base model hub.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the 1.6 auto uses hubs similar to a 1.6 gti but without the offset flange? I remember fitting a 1.6 driveshaft with a tu/ma type inboard joint to fit an old automatic a few years ago. Also I'm not sure of he hub arrangement on diesels but I'm sure I've used their shafts on a gti 1.6.

Is the extra offset to allow for vented discs? Or just to increase the track for wheel clearance?

Thx for the replies.

Pete: you may be right there :{

Mei: brand new dampers placed on the car the day before the new tyres and 15" SMR's were installed. Mei, would your suggestion of having a 1.9 disc on a base model hub make the wheel stand out as described..... i didnt think the disc would have the chance to change the alignment of the wheel like the hub does?

It is ironic that you should say that as i have ordered new discs to place on and the supplier has sent incorrect ones i think [yet to be installed ]
