Torque Settings For Wishbones And Droplinks?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm in the process of renewing my wishbone arms and droplinks but I cannot find anywhere the torque settings. My Haynes doesn't seem to cover that topic in depth. I have had a look on the forum and found some torque settings but not what I think I was looking for.

I have done the bottom droplink nut where it attaches to the main bar, and top where it connects to the strut at 58nm. I would have thought that would be to tight especially for the top?

The wishbones I have renewed the bolts and nuts etc so the 17mm (front) and the rear which is 19mm bit and Bolt, what would be the correct torque?

Thanks guys

It's pretty irrelevant because you can't get anything in there to torque them with!!!

Do them "tight" by hand. It's more important to make sure you don't stress the bushes by getting the wishbones level before you tighten the bolts.

Well strange you should say that Im sure I only did them as tight as I could get them before. I have a pit so at the moment the new arms are on just the bolts are slack until I found out for sure. So the droplink S settings is doing Bolt nuts to 58nm too tight?

I don't bother torquing drop links either! They aren't always made of the finest stuff go a good nip Is adequate.

I do torque the hub pinch, and subframe to body shell bolts. They are more important!

Great I've just been out and managed with the wheel on, slacken and tighten with a spanner tight my droplinks. Thanks for the info ????

Hello, a quick update, it is possible to get a torque wrench in to torque them but it is very annoying . The fronts dead easy, the rear a true mission. I used a UJ knuckle type 1/2" extension bar, then another extension bar to clear the bottom of the wishbone then from there my big torque wrench.

I understand that using the UJ knuckle and extensions bars will effect the how tight the nut and Bolt will be so I have it anther quarter turn or so past the 78nm it was meant to be.

Pug_ham mentioned wobble bars would be better in which I agree as keeping the UJ knuckle joint on the 19mm nut aswell as holding and keeping the weight of both the torque wrench and extension bars and tightening action takes some doing in such a small area.

I maybe did cheat and use my pit but hey.

The car pasted it's MOT with flying colours today so when my wobble bars come I will do a few hundred miles on the new bones let them settle/ bed in and check the torque again. Thinking I maybe slacken the bolts off again and then retighten? as they will be slightly more then what they should be in tightness.

I understand just done "F" tight without torquing them but given they have a torque setting I was trying to get them done properly. Maybe they should last longer.
