Recommended Posts

hi everyone im matt i have been working on this for about 2 years now and thought id share with you my journey :) i started off with a mi16 with a rotrex supercharger it wasnt a very neat conversion and after about 2 months the bottom end went so i decided to uprae evrything and go with richard walkers conversion being alot more compact and easier to work with. here are some pics

this is of the old kit i had fitted

this is the dimma when i bought it needed a bit of work but is a original and very hard to come by now

i then ended up buying a 309 that was lowered on coilovers and used all the running gear to make it that lil wider :)

after a couple of months of saving decided to get the body work tided up and resprayed

now this was the stage i was at last wednesday all i was waiting for was my loom, il be running mbe management, unfortunately for me i went to put oil in opened the sump to drain any oil that was in there from wen i first recieved the engine i put a bit in across the cams and when i opend the sump there was coolent in there with the oil!! now bearing in mind this was a brand new custom built engine that cost alot of money to say the least i wasnt happy!

I removed the engine friday which has now gone back to the company that built it for them to have a look at and put right :( im gutted. I just hope it comes back right this time.

thanks well tbh all i want, is to get it running and mapped as soon as the engine comes back and is back in the car. then il be looking at getting the wheels refurbished and new tyres think gonna need them then maybe upgrading the brakes :) i want to keep all the inside standard but debating on putting in a cage stiffen it up a lil? what you think?

Very nice, gonna be a monster when it's finished. The red stripe really suits it and it's nice to see original orange indicators being used too B)

I'd go for a cage if I could afford one, I can't help but feel a little unsafe riding around in a 20+ year old car with all the safety features of a lunch box.

got to be my favourite 205 of all time (apart from mine)

just one question, why didnt you use the gti6 engine? its tryed and tested with the rotrex kit.

well to be honest i had a ported and polished s16 big valve head with a block and a mi16 to 205 conversion exhaust manifold 4 branch and at the biggining of the build i was trying to keep things on a budget so thought it would be cheaper to just get the engine i had re built with forged parts, but to be fair the budget kinda went out the window. but had the engine and decided to stick with it, and as far as im aware it will be a first for a s16 to be charged? so i guess will have to see how it goes :)

Another update,

after sending the engine back to be looked at by the company that built it due to the coolent leaking in to the sump, when it arrived with them the carried out a leak down test on the engine as a whole it failed.

so it was then stripped down so the head and block could be tested seperately each passed which would point to the head gasket in my opinion?

when they put it back together it failed again! it was then tested with positive pressure, and passed i was then told that it failed the first leak down test due to the seal being lifted on the water pump as they were pulling a vacume on it!? can this happen?

i have never heard of this before and now the bloke is saying that as they havent found anything wrong with the engine i need to pay for the work that has been carried out!! the fact that ive spent 3500 on this engine and sent it back as there was a problem and now he wants another 700 for stripping it down :( which i dont have, really dont know what to do as hes got my engine in pieces. does anyone think this is a bit un reasonable and any ideas?

That looks awesome. Love the red stripe, particularly simple but great little touch. Best dimma i've seen in a long time.

If there's water in the sump, it can only really point to one of three things in my eyes (as I'm assuming you didn't pour it in the oil filler!):

1) You royally screwed up the plumbing and muddled breathers and coolant pipes up

2) You're still using the water-oil heat exchanger and that's leaking badly

3) There's something amiss with the engine.

Did you fully rule out the first two before taking the engine to them?

As for whether they're right to charge it, I'd say that if there's nothing wrong with the engine itself and it's a installation issue (see #1 and 2 above) then they're perfectly justified in making a reasonable charge to cover their time and consumable costs. £700 does sound like a lot of money if all they've done is remove the head from the block and done a few pressure tests (plus one assumes the labour for refitting the head and consumables like headbolts and gasket) but it's hard to say without knowing exactly what they're charging you for and what their standard labour rate is

I take it that none of this discussed prior to them commensing work?

I am of course making the assumption that whoever built the engine is trustworthy and is not trying to charge you for fixing their cockup... which isn't unheard of.

when the engine was fully installed i filled the header tank with coolent i know 100 % that the pipes were in the correct places, as have done this many times befor. i went to drain the sump of any oil that was in there as when i first recieved the engine i put some oil over the cams to keep them well lubricated so wanted to drain it off befor filling the engine with the new oil. when i did the first thing to come out was about a cup full of the red anti freeze.i had used, then the oil that was in it.

i dont have a water - oil heat exchanger, ive got a air oil cooler, and if i had connected a hose in the wrong place the sump would have surely been full but it leaked the cup full over a week, after draining it all out i left it over night and the next day to check again it again had a lil anti freeze come out.

i cant understand how else it could have possibly got in there, basically i rang them straight away and they were good as gold in taking it back to look at it, then they phoned me to say it had failed, so they went ahead and stripped it down for further investigation nothing was mentioned about having to pay as the engine in my opinion must have had a fault as they told me it failed.

i really dont know where to go from here as ive not got that kinda money to hand, i would like to think there trust worthy but have heard alot of bad things about them after i had bought the engine. but im not one to just go on that as i know from experience that the bad things will all ways get mentioned but not the good and thats why i havent mentioned the companys name. but tbh i cant see what i can do if it was there cock up and there trying to charge me for it. :( the engine hadnt even been run.

i havent mentioned the companys name.

Who built the engine?

The OP has done the right thing by not naming and shaming the company involved so please don't try to change his mind. Similar situations in the past have resulted in threats of legal action which puts the future of the forum in jeopardy.
