[Car_Overhaul] 1993 Barn Find White 205 Gti Restoration

Recommended Posts

damo

Hi all, well after doing a GTI6 engine in my 91 CTI I wanted a new project for the winter! So after looking around for a few months I found a local 1.9 GTI from a barn clearance! Its a 1993 white GTI non sun roof with 3 owners before me 120k and loads of paper work.

So I went to look at it and almost walked away as the guy wanted too much but in the end we did a deal and met in the middle :) He even delivered it for me although he did replace the broken indicators before I picked it up just incase I drove it home.

So its been sat for 18 months in a barn so after a quick hose down in his yard heres some pic's once it was pulled out of the barn. Rear beam was ok and it started up fine with no smoke etc. It ticks over better then my old 8v in the CTI ever did!!!

As you can see the indicators are wrong as the clear phase 2 ones didnt get fitted and I dont think the fog lights are original. Nothing to worry about as these are easily swapped :)

So the bad points !!

  • Bit of rust around the ariel on the roof
  • Damage around the lock as someones tried to break in
  • Dent in the boot as a ladder fell on it removing it from the barn!!
  • Rust in the boot floor in the usual spots

So nothing to much that some TLC wont fix :)

Being a 1993 model it does have a CAT :( but I'm planning to restore it to original as its all standard anyway.

The wifes called him Chalky as its planned to be hers as she never gets to drive the CTI.

Sod's law as I have just got benign positioned vertigo!! So I'm sea sick 24/7 and its going to be for 5-6 weeks at least. All that time off work and I can't do anything :(

So Chalky is parked in the garage till September and the wife gets to drive the CTI as I cant drive till the doctor gives me the all clear!

Forgot to mention the interior is mint, the leather on the seats doesn't really look worn at all and it still had the spare wheel and cage in the boot :) Although the SMR does need a refurb and that tyres had it.

So as soon as I can I'll swap out the metal water pipe and flush the liquids and get it fully services and running :)

Suspect I'll find some other things to fix whilst in the engine bay.

Looks a nice car, the orange indicators were throwing me off, the bumpers look like grey early ones aswell, but then the interior, rear lights and engine are all clearly ph2. Looks like the late 8v motronic setup aswell - which might explain its better behaviour at idle. And one more thing...mmmmmmm non sunroof!

Good luck with the project.

Some good news, A big thanks to Henry for looking things up from the records etc :)a

The Peugeot Sport club have a historical record of this and have identified the oldest and youngest 1900 GTIs.

The official records are paper based and are in France and Peugeot UK had not got access to this when I enquired a few years back.

If you think you have a late one, drop me a pm with your chassis and VIN and I'll map it against some known cars.

The good news reply was -

Well I have some good news for you.....

Yours is now the latest chassis numbered 205 GTI that I know of! It beat the previous barn find 29k miler by 4 on the numbers and the engine number was similar, so it sounds pretty complete.

From the info Henry has tracked it looks like I take the no. 1 spot for the last known gti made as the Vin numer is 4 newer than the now number 2 gti :)

So a very good find, got to love farmers keeping things in barns for years :)

Cool new indeed about it being possibly the last 205. Best of luck with it. Barn finds are always interesting!

Nice find, unlucky with the vertigo, be good to see how the restoration goes! :)

But, it won't be anywhere near the last one i'm afraid, there's some later registration GTi's around, there was a thread about them a few years ago, certainly some M & N iirc registered ones about. I guess Henry's checked the PSC register, which of course only means about the ones registered with them.

Edit; quick search; http://forum.205gtid...c=117660&st=-10

Out of interest was it a barn find per se, or just kept by the previous owner in a barn outbuilding on a farm?

well the farmer drove it for a year and then stuck it in his barn in 2010 when its tax ran out. he used the barn as storage and filled it with other things like some fancy 4x4 bits (looked like a dakar job) and horse stuff. his wife runs some horse training thing now and they cleared the out buildings for space, big farm and he has a old escort rally car with his car collection!!

who said farmers are poor :)

so this got dug out during his clearance of the out buildings with a v8 tvr!!! suspect i paid too much for it but most 205 sheds go looking at ebay, time will tell :)

anyway hopfully ill be all fixed soon :) and can start taking pic's and start the restore :)

ok, brief update as I've started a few things :)

After it has been stood for a while whilst I notice a puddle under the car! So water leak and off I went to find it. After spending 4 hours drilling out the bolts to get the cover off under the drivers wheel arch I found the problem :)

So next job was to order a replacement :)

Whilst waiting it seemed a good time to rust kill any rust spots.

Whilst do the trim and taking photos the flash has highlighted a few new dents!

post-10898-0-22454500-1351191744_thumb.jpg

So something to try and pop out but not as bad as the boot lid!

Anyway I have a 3 week pause now as the builders in to extend the garage and put in a new door. The red CTI is in storage whilst a pile of bricks takes it place the the White GTI is now covered in dust!! Didn't think to cover anything up in the garage and the disk cutters have made a real mess!!

So my next job is the jack it up and soft under the boot - rust kill and underseal. I'll clean up the back brakes then and start him up to turn it around.

Also noticed the sump plugs leaking a bit when doing the water pipe so another job for another day but I'll probably pull the engine out, do a service, cam belt and clutch etc with the engine on a pallet.

Easier I think and I can clean and paint things then :)

yeah, the seats are real mint. Needs some body work but things have been real slow!!! need to get a move one once the garage is done :)

If I mess the bodywork up the father in-law did spray the council vans so i'll borrow a compressor and do a full respray (Well get him to do it and teach me!). I think a rattle can should do it assuming I get a good colour match :)
