Recommended Posts

Cheers Stef, your cars going well btw.

Suspect it needs some welding :) Inner wing looks a bit rust so being heavy handed I know ill make a few holes!!! Been really lazy with it, mainly due to the garage work! new front and door and with all the weather a 2 week jobs taken the builder 4 weeks!!!

So a few small bits over the winter whilst its cold, but I must pull my finger out and the engine to do the clutch, cam belt etc in the new year.

Nice find, wish mine was that clean!

Sorry to hi-jack the thread a bit but saw the bit where you could find out about build number etc and it got me interested..... Mines an L plate, first registered august 1993... Would like to know a build number for that as I thought L's were unusual sight!!!

Hi all, finally started this restore project again!! (I'll get some pictures up asap) so best put a quick update up.

Starting with the rust!! So she's up on axle stands on the rear beam at the moment. bumpers got to come off but everything's rusted up! so snap snap snap............................

Few issues I noticed after getting the wheels off with a lump hammer!!

Near side brake lines rusty as anything so will need replacing

Far side caliper is stuck and bleed nipples snapped!

Rear bumpers rusted fixings so these need replacing.

On the plus side I'm getting good dripping bolts out :) Pictures to be uploaded as soon as I take some but I plan on spending one day a week doing bits starting with the underside of the car.

So following the removal of the rear beam and fuel tank the usual spots behind the tank looked good.

Rear beam in the garden so as its out its only right to rebuild it!! More money :)

post-10898-0-63302200-1367708539_thumb.jpg

So a good and and wire brush was in order. On further inspection and a little poke, the boot floor was proving to be a rust mine field with holes etc!!

so the rust had to go and the cutting starts!

Dan has a better picture of the hole in the boot now almost half the floors cut out to have a sheet welded in but i'll aim to get some more pics.

Forgot to mention the brake lines were shot so these are out and to be fully replaced.

Plan is now to spend one day a weekend on him and one even when im not away with work.

As I said to damo before we started to cut, if it was a ordinary gti then it probably would of made more sense to break or send to the cloud in the sky but the fact that its the last know gti ever made then its worth doing in my eyes.

Sorry dont agree to that even if was a ordinary gti then it should be restored there are too many shells that get scrapped if everyone thought like that the 205 will die out very quickly. As for the rust that looks fine compared to mine that had rotted out the whole front but after some time and tlc my front is completly rebuilt and rust free free.

I gave the welds a code of oxide primer for protection until its all done and seam sealed up :)

So this weekend we may have the floor fully finished so we can find a few other jobs to keep us busy!! I'll get some more pics once the floors done.

Been busy the last two weeks :)

so the boot under floor and tank area got etch primed and 3 coats of hamerite (messy stuff to paint on and time consuming!)

finished finally

post-10898-0-22442000-1371924748_thumb.jpg

Cleaned the wheel arch both sides to give a paint over at some point when touching up underneath after fitting the brake lines and fuel tank back.

post-10898-0-65021900-1371924800_thumb.jpg

Inner boot floor prep -

post-10898-0-25692700-1371924961_thumb.jpg

Final primer coat before painting :)

post-10898-0-97828400-1371924972_thumb.jpg

So all left for over 24 hours to go nice and hard before sprays :)

Underneath took too long painting and drips everywhere so next time some spray method is in order!
