this is my 12th 205 gti over the years and cant wait to get started.

The last one i done was a laser gti6, had loads of fun in this at knockill, crail and some spirited sunday morning runs, was planning the same set up untill a mate of mine that never got round to finshing his 309 8v turbo project and needed the space so i took it off his hands knowing the parts he's already put in would be perfect for my 205 project.

IMG_6390.jpg

day 1

today i managed to strip all the bits from the 309 that i plan to use or ebay ,it's an e reg and only covered 91k.

its a shame to scrap the shell as its solid but after 3 weeks and no bites its off to the crusher it goes.

IMG_6440.jpg

so i have

2.0 turbo engine with mi fly wheel, new clutch, belt, tensioner and water pump all fitted.

309 box

309 wishbones,polly bushed

gti6 front brakes

group N engine and box mounts

group N top strut mounts

309 rear beam

309 goodwood leather in mint condition.

IMG_6439.jpg

IMG_6437.jpg

also managed to get the seats and carpet out the 205,no idea why someone fitted black and green.

IMG_6387.jpg

boot floor is goin to need some attention as there are a few holes but the rest looks in good condition minght be a diffrent story once i get under it next week to drop the exhaust, beam and tank.

grinders at the ready............

it drove the 50 miles home after sitting on a drive for 9 months without any problems, drove really tight too,not that it matters since everything is getting replaced.

needs a few parts like headlights, fog lights ect will pick up a red carpet and door cards too and will get a full respray at the end.

Has the 309 shell died already?

I have no space and a pregnant wife who will most likely murder me but it looks (looked) pretty straight and seems a shame to scrap.

Plus I fancy a big brother to the 205.

Well I had the 309 shell advertised for almost a month and no interest so it had to go since I have my eye on a cheap cti :-)

Busy day today but managed to squeeze in 2 hours on the 205 before i went home, more of a micro update than anything else.

Wanted to get the front end stripped tonight so that I can get the engine out on Friday.

No surprises here

If all goes well Friday I should get the engine out and back bumper off then I measure up the steel and build the rotisserie on Sunday, should make doing the under side so much easier.

So got a few hours in on Friday afternoon and managed to get the 1.6 engine out the way and tucked up in the parts bin

Gave the bay a wee hose off

bbda8331cd5804c814751f5d99602557.jpg

Decided I'd have a go at cutting the wings off and see what lurks beneath.

Needless to say the wing is now scrap, I've no idea how anyone can cut these off and save them lol

This is the other side of the rust I can see in the drivers footwell, I'll deal with this when I get the shell on its side.

Had a cancelation this afternoon so went and picked up the steel and got started making the "spit"

Mate reckons ill need to shorten the tube section and I might add a small support under it to take any strain off the joint.

Will finish up the rear mounting bar at the weekend once the axle is off since I'm bolting the bar through the holes the axle is bolted too.

Even tho this is all the dirty jobs just now, I'm really enjoying it again.

not much going on with the car this week as i really needed to get it mounted on the spit so i can move it in and out the unit.

dropped the subframe and axle now just needs jacking at both ends and drill some locking points at the spin height, would have finished it if i never got over excited and snapped the drill bit

can move it in and out the unit myself really easy and it feels pretty stable

So the rotisserie worked, was a little worried as this is the 1st one I've made. c2e8e5269d60ab2c9a2950b7e9fa98fc.jpg08b0c93edaf8ff2d252edf583e2438f9.jpg

Next job was too strip all the pipe work, tank, filler neck plumbing and clips ect. 4cb6c4660b2fe1942d82c8fa3034b5af.jpg

Then it was time to clean up any rust spots with flap discs and wire brushes on the grinder. 3818c0bed4c07bc59b79b6e2a2d66ede.jpg8f9cdffc9899d56496ea621713141d9e.jpgc2070fe08223c633eda4eff2d6c1ab18.jpga3f41a70c7aee1616e1d111ec5fd6467.jpg

All the bare metal is now primed with acid ech primer.

Over the holidays I'll hopefully get the seam sealer done then I can start on the arches and boot floor and get the hole underside stone chipped, sprayed and cleared. Quite pleased with how it's coming along even tho progress is slow with work commitments just now.

Some rusty looking bits at either side of the tank to clean up then its onto the boot floor, I'll clean up what I can but think I'll need to wait till the shells off the spit to repair the boot pan since the frame it now in the way.

Another little up date. Never got the time I wanted on the car over the holidays but I've got in a few hours here and there. I've spent a fair bit if time grinding out any rusty crap that I could find then hit it with some rust treatment then acid etch primed. B83D1C53-5E8B-4D1A-8027-A19EDEC1F52D-778D1233F95-2708-42F5-BCFA-A97C987AC101-778207074A7-A8CB-469B-B610-4E3394C38FD5-778 Then it was onto stone chip. I went for gravetec plus, mixed a bottle of white and a bottle of black and applied with shoots gun and compressor. Really pleased with how this turned out, especially being my 1st time using the gun. I done a light coat then a heavy coat. 21b762e682dfe46964eee8cb4616513c.jpgdce892ddc851fe43a32e56b2c539f2e4.jpgb58d89a982a480dc611c894c289bc284.jpg Then it was time for paint, again 1st time using the gun, I done 3 coats of base and 2 coats of clear.

These pics where from my phone so colour doesn't look the best. F18024E6-56A8-45E9-B9D2-4023411E8A28-9746DC8524D-11B1-43CD-9288-A00101C35976-9747378392D-9955-4A63-B5C8-8B927F6EA736-97413633C94-EFCB-47C7-AFDA-34108CFDB19D-974 Really don't think I could have pulled off a job this good without building the spit. It's made working on the floor a million times more enjoyable. Plus no rust in my eyes, bonus!

Still have a few pin holes in the inner wings and the boot floor section under the spit frame work to do but that will be easy enough to do on the ground before the beam goes back on.

I like the detail your're putting into this.

I can see this beating mine when it's finished.

It's not going to be a show car or anything, I like to drive them hard but it will be clean and original looking from the outside.

Show cars are a waste of time. I drove my last restoration for 6 years after.

I'm planning on doing same again with the Cti.

It's easy to get carried awaythough, and I have a little OCD so I end up spending more money and time than originally planned.

Keep up the high standard though that way you wont have any regrets on shortcuts when it's finished ;)

Not had an update in a while, been really busy at work so only doing an hour here and there.

Over the past few weeks if been collecting all the parts I need to get the under side finished. You do get carried away. Every part that comes off gets cleaned then I think........... I'll just get a new one lol.

Spent quite a few hours with the wire wheel on the bench grinder cleaning and stripping old paint and crud from bolts brackets and clips, even took a few bigger bits to get shot blasted. So by the end of next week I should have the engine bay and all the parts underneath repainted.

Was told the 309 beam was in great condition but decided to have a look for myself. Bearings all looked ok and still had grease on them but one of the shafts is quite pitted, The tb's where seized in solid but soon got them moving with some heat and Tom fentons puller tool.

All I need to pick up now is 2x trailing arm shafts and some dust seals and bleed nipples for the rear calipers then I can start building.

It feels like its taking forever doing all the cleaning and painting but by the time I'm done she'll be food for at least another 20 years of fun.

Love it, this is what I need to do to the up underside of mine, I just don't have the welding skills to make a spit.

Great work.
