Well as the Ma box is crap mine started grinding and crunching when chaging gears.

I've got a new box off an ax gt and have swapped it.

Just need to fill it with oil... is the little black cap on the top where the oil goes in?

2 litres?

Done and done!


Feels weird to drive without having to force gears and lots of crunching.

Also feels weird becuase the clutchbite point is in a different place!

Grrrrrrrr it's deffo not an XS gearbox and is a normal one.

To your original question...strictly speaking...
...no and yes

There is a specific filler plug - IIRC above and left of the drain plug

You fill it up through that hole with the car level until it starts coming back out at you

For a completely empty gearbox that should be 2 litres, but if you just stick 2 litres in through the breather (the black plug you mention) then you could be overfilling.

Remember it's the 75/80W oil you need - not that common to get hold of (Halfords do it)

what have you done with the old box??

also martin is right you really should not fill through the breather but its a way of doing it but not the quickest or the right way

how can you tell its not a xs/ax gt box you should be at 18mph at 1000 revs in 5th if it is or 21 if not

I have the old box but I let it run dry on oil B)

before 70mph was 4000ish revs, now it's 3000, That works out about right to your speeds.

The new box was completly empty and I put 2 litres down that hole, don't know where the drain or filler plugs are on the side but i will take a photo and maybe someone can pointthem out to me ready for when I swap the box AGAIN for an XS one


I used the right oil :blush:


Took me 4 hours in total and that was my first ever try so I was pleased.

take the passage wheel of and you should see two plugs with a 8mm square holes in, one on the bottom of the diff (drain) and one is on the front of the box

that sounds like a 205 rallye box stupidly long

p.s. a box change for me is 45mins B)

and a engine and gearbox is 4 hrs
I must stop braking my xs's lol

What do you use to undo those square plugs :)

I recon I can do it in 2 hours next time.

a sump plug tool its called and you want a 8mm which also works for the sump to :)

You want one of these fellas.

As stu says good for the sump plug and filler/drain holes on the gearbox. Plus they are also good for tensioning up the cambelt as they fit the square hole in the tensioner pully.

Or one way I have found when I haven't had the right tool is the square bar in the middle of a door handle mechanism :) , is just the right size and works a treat to. Bit of useless information but still thought i might aswell share it with you.
