Ew Pistons/xu Rods

Recommended Posts

Looking for a cheapish solution to build a 2L xu without the expense of needing custom pistons and wondered if the ew10 85mm pistons would fit onto xu10j4 rods?

If so, it would allow me to use my xu9j4 88mm crank and a solid deck diesel block bored out to 85mm to acheive 2L. This is to meet with hillclimb regs.

Could someone also tell me the compression height of standard ew10 pistons?

Cheers

Managed to do a little more digging and have come up with some info:

Xud9 block height = 234.8mm

Compression height ew10 piston = 29.5mm

Xu9 crank = 88mm

Xu10 rod = 158mm

This combination would leave the pistons sitting 3.3mm down the bore which isn't great. I haven't worked out the CR for this yet but I'd imagine the block would need a fair size skim to bring it up to a reasonable level for NA.

There is also the possible issue of the fitting of the rod onto the piston as i believe the ew piston is floating whereas the gti6 is an interference fit. Oh and am I correct in saying the pin diameter is different too - 22mm for XU10J4RS & 21mm for EW10?

Its looking like all the work required in preparing the block/rods to accept the ew pistons i may as well save up for custom pistons unless there are any other 85mm pistons on the market that would be suitable. Any thoughts?

you could go 86x86 and use standard XU10 stuff.

I've found that once you go away from standard bits, it becomes quite expensive however you do end up building something very durable, the outright result depends on how much you throw at the head really, once you spend £600 on a set of rods and £500 on the pistons, there's a vast choice you can make on the head.

I've already got an 88mm crank so looking to use that if possible. Also i can't justify the cost of steel rods & pistons at this stage which is why my preference is to find a suitable alternative. However this might prove to be more difficult than I'd anticipated.

Has anyone else on here put together an 88x85 engine using stock parts?
