Checking A Boxs Identity?

Recommended Posts

After trying to find an XS box for a while and ending up with 2 long ratio ones I just wondered is there a way to tell before I fit it?

Could I take the end cover off and check 5th gear? Different amount of teeth etc?

You can check the code against the peugeot servicebox.

I found this page quite useful too. It should give you an idea

You can take off the diff cover on the rear and see what is stamped on the final drive.

The only way I can tell properly is remove oil drain plug, you can then see the crown wheel teeth just inside. Put a blob of tip-x or use a marker pen to mark one of the teeth, put in gear and turn with a shaft inserted (ideally just the inner part of a old shaft), count the teeth as you turn till your back to the start. Thats how many teeth you have. You can do this with box on car or loose on the floor. I think off the top of my head you need 60 crown wheel teeth, the pinion will be 14 = 4.28 final drive which is the XS box. I'll have to dig out my notes to confirm tho.

Also just to confirm only the 205 XS has them ratios, no other. the Xs is the lowest final drive out of all MA boxes except 1 106 model. People say the 205 Rallye box is the same but its not.

It's the Euro Rallye that has the same ratios not the UK Rallye

I thought the GT GTX SR XT and a few other model shared ratios with the XS?

Sorry wrong word used, the XS crown wheel & pinnion is the only box with a 4.28, which is the lowest 205 MA gearbox, the ratios I think are common with other boxes.

Just to confirm 60 teeth on the XS and 63 on the base model.

60th teeth on CWP prob grives a 99% chance of it being an XS box, but I think there's non CR gearsets in the MA5 that also have the 60/14 CWP setup. I'll check my autodata info to confirm.
