so the story starts when a friend dropped off his 205 which he had only just bought a month or so before but could not afford to run her , now i had wanted one for ages but due to insurace i could not

she wasnt in bad condition but did have a few dints etc. so she stayed at mine for a few weeks when he called me asking if i wanted it , now my birthday is on the 30th of sep and this was around 15weeks away i did an isurance quote and it was good news if i paid it off all at once it was alot cheaper so i saved up over the next few months so i could afford her , now i do like the 205s as they are but i wanted to modernise it but without loosing the retro look etc , so for my first ever effort at restoring a car i got craking.

I started with taking off both bumpers and all the side trims to be re-painted in diablo red (bumpers) and white trims.

I also add im not a pro painter im learning with everything i do , once i had done all the trim etc started with the car

sanded it down and took off all the extra bits we could eg indicators wing mirrors and rear wiper etc , filled dints and primerd all the filling etc all pics below will show this also took the rear lights and front lights out , we also found a big friend shown below. After this i painted the bonnet (wanted to see how good the colour looked)

then did all the filling and priming etc..

after all this was done we tried to paint the car but it didnt come out too well as the compressor was far too small so i sent it off to be painted

Once it had being brought back we decided to see what was going to need doing to her to get her running correctly as it hadnt been run properly for 9 months and this is the list of problems

oil leak once engine had warmed

rear lights not working correctly

front side light not working

indicators not working

jet washers not working

new battery needed

radio not working

gauges not all working

speedo not working

and a few other bits and bats

so my mechanic friend took her away and then brought her back all fixed so i put her back toghter and changed the wheels (which are aliitle big )

The next day i took her on her first bypass run and this happend got too 85 and a loud bang and the front drivers arch trim snapped off! and took me ages to polish off all the silicion off see below

i then took her for some day pics (new trim was purhased straight away) then took her home and cleaned all interior.

then last week i got some fog lights and also got the water sensor and auto choke (cold start) fixed

also got some wind defletors for her see below

this is currently where im at with her but will be updating regulary from now on.

Its a nice car and a lot of effort gone into it!

really well done to you :)

The only thing (and this is my personal opinion) is the white bits need to be black and the wheels need to be better suited to the car! Though, that being said, the car does look nice :D

its a bit marmite :P (but so is mine) looks like you're doing a good job though so fair play to you, what wheels are they? I think theyd look good if they were 15s.

Bit of a crap update , ive tried my best to trim the new grill cut all bottom lugs and sides down but it just wont fit , i took grill off closed bonnet tried sliding the grill up ( nothing stopping it as the lugs where gone off the bottom) and it was still to bulky so 35quid and a day spraying and sanding all wasted :( however im not one to be fully defeated so im going to try and desing my own custom grill out of an original ( so i lnow it will fit ) and make it myself .

hi all have not done an update in a while due to being busy but i have plenty to tell so here goes , as my aim was to restore and improve the 205 i decided as id paid for alot of things standard to be fixed and i had done a few bit on the exterior, i would punt for something that gives her abit more grunt under the bonnet so i had carbs on my mind now i knew there where a few to choose from so i consulted someone who builts 205s from scratch and told him i also had a hunting problem , now he told me that the best ones to go for are infact r1 bike carbs as they are better than webbers as they dont need tuning all the time and also stop the cold stalling issue , so i found some at a bargain price on ebay , now this is were the annoying things start to happen as im no mechaic i asked if i would need anything else i was told no so i thought happy days and made the purchase. here they are

IMG_0332.jpg

i was exited as ive been told u can get a 30bhp gain from carbs and if not it rapidly improves accelration

but the the problems came , after taking it to the garage and paying labour fees just to find out they didnt fit due to the alternator been in the way . after leaving with the same as i went in but money down i was annoyed then i found out that i would have needed a fuel pressure regulator which wasnt mentioned to me , after consulting the person i bought the carbs off he told me i had to remove the powersteering pump fit a lower sitiing alternator bracket and a shorter belt and then i would be fine so i paid for a bundle of items off him and he also sent me a lower pressure fuel pump and a fuel pressure regulator so i returned to the garage on tuesday with re-newed hope , my mechanic made a start and did manage to lower alternator and remove the power steering , they he fit the carbs , but before he made a start on fueling them up and getting them running i told him to close the bonnet as they looked to stick out quite high , now i may add i had seen auto bonnets on ebay and has asked if i would need one as was told no, but to my sadness it would not close so i once again left with nothing more that what i went in with , infact less as i no longer have power steering but tbh its not much different. so as it stands i have an auto bonnet on the way which i got half price but once again i was told (i thought they would fit under a standard bonnet)

now ive spoke to a few people about the 205 and ive been told so many different things i cannot belive ive been told carbs are terrible and only give a 10-12hp gain then ive been told they dont work well in cold , then ive been told webbers are great , i have being told u can get upto 40hp out of carbs , but ive only spoke to 2 people about these R1s and ive being assured i have the best set up , it hard when i dont know what i doing and try to get adive so i going to see how these carbs do for myself i will get in rolling roaded and i will have a video 20-75mph speed test for u as i have already done one standard.

now lets move on to some happier things, things i understand and enjoy. as you can see i have large 17s on my car which are too big well as im a keen amatuer sprayer and getting better i decided to spray my gold speedlines white and replace the big wheels so here how i progressed with that.

IMG_0339.jpg

job 1 was take off center caps

IMG_0340.jpg

as they were

IMG_0342.jpg

after spending an hour in the cold garage i got one sanded down and left it for a day or so

IMG_0347.jpg

got 2 done

IMG_0348.jpg

all sanded

IMG_0350.jpg

got some playing cards to use but later had to be scrapped as they would not stay in and 2 of the wheels the tyre would not allow them to slide in as they where flimsy ones

IMG_0351.jpg

primered

IMG_0352.jpg

primered

IMG_0353.jpg

center caps i gave a light sand down and just used rattle cans as would have been pointess using the proper gun etc

IMG_0354.jpg

IMG_0355.jpg

IMG_0356.jpg

quick blast throught the stages so they were all ready to put on

IMG_0367.jpg

IMG_0368.jpg

IMG_0369.jpg

colouerd

IMG_0373.jpg

IMG_0375.jpg

laquered

IMG_0380.jpg

on car please forgive the overspray on tyers as it will come

decided to take her on to the snowy tops near me to get some better photos so still no carbs but looking alot better on the new wheels

i am all for painting the gti kit but the more i look at it i just dont think the white cuts it,if it was me i would do the kit diablo and have the inserts white if you want your red n white combo, and also the wheel centes white with just the outline of the lion red, also the 1/4 badges diablo with white gti bages and the rear panel diablo.

cant knock the effort though mate keep it up

It's definitely not a "GTI combination", but I think it works out OK as the car is in great condition and in a non-standard colour.

Well, based on the colours themselves, it's a nice contrasting combination, just perhaps strange to see it on the car :).

Well i have to say i didnt expect many to like it as ive changed a classic with what is my modern touch , tbh i love it think it looks smart a hell , an plenty of people agree , plenty do not aswel but would be a boring world if everyone liked the same thing , not going to let it stop me like new auto bonnet coming soon and carbs going on hopefully , its nowhere near done and i plan to keep her for a long time , i would like to thank you for your comment as all are welcome

So finally got round to finishing the bonnet over last few days , so here is how i got on

87BF4DA3-5B5E-4931-848D-DEE4BC16D657-583

Put some black on to help with the flatting

1D344267-D4D4-42DB-940D-13FE41F4F6FD-583

Flatted

6C7A1BA3-6064-4E6F-BD5B-A20C2A1B886D-583

Painted

79220C72-FE89-4792-B10C-5088DB9D5A49-583

Laquered

Unfortunatly some water came outta of the gun and some buts fell into the laquer so i had to make do

53A6D246-8711-4683-997C-C2A45F5089E2-583

Buffed up , not perfect as alot of the little but have left small chips but things like this always happend in dirty garages

874E719C-8AAE-4136-A762-2867DD3BA029-583

Strut brace :)

247C37DE-6F4D-4361-90D9-242EC15DEBB0-583

On :)

0615074F-22FD-4730-8DBC-7CC8385FF1DA-583

Bonnet on seems alot lighter than car despite same paint code and one corner is alittle high as when ive repaired it due to it been bent all the way round , ive set it slighly high but not too bad

All in all not bad considering i did it myself .

Just a quick update , got 4 new tyres fitted today , just budget ones but has made a massive difference , all the other tyres were odd an one was illegal and 2 were on the brink , also found out one wheel mesured 90 out of balance! The alloy is nakerd never realised but he did manage to get it back to 0 so had a go up the local bypass and was very smooth so despite just the budget tyres im very happy , hopefully have the carbs fitted friday (fingers crossed)
