1.9 Gti Engine Water Leak

Recommended Posts

arwel

Been loosing a fair bit of water recently..found th problem last night before I was due to use the car as an official vehicle on the Mynydd Du road rally. Quick pic below. Any idea if it is a headgasket leak or a fault related to the inlet manifold or something else?

Assuming it's an 8v then there is a waterway that isn't used that the inlet manifold gasket seals, so it could be that. What I have done in the past is drill and tap the waterway M8 and then block it off with a grub screw, no more loosing coolant if you have the manifold off for some reason.

Otherwise it could be the head gasket, one of my cars started leaking from an old head gasket, they do deteriorate over the years.

You'll have to have an investigate, I have a coolant system tester which is a good bit of kit, allows you to pump the system up to pressure whilst cold then look for leaks or drips without burning yourself on a red hot engine.

Cheers for that Tom. Mmm.. head off job may be worthwhile.. I have no history of the head gasket being changed so think it's worth going ahead with it.

I'd recommend plugging the holes off as I mention above. Takes 5 min to do both.

Having the same problem , RTV couldn't make the holes stop leaking water.

Is it possible to use some epoxy instead?

What is 8M ? And to drill what ? Didn't get u 100%

Thanks Tom
