Creating More Induction Roar

Recommended Posts

Well thanks to Miles, my 1.9 is now running really sweetly and seems to be making power in all the right places (for those who want to know, overfuelling was CTS and hesitations sorted by recon AFM and lack of power sorted by replacing the dizzy)

Now before i go on, I have absolutally no plans of modding this pug to make more power, if I want power i'll take out my 300ZX and smoke most things on the road (sounds arrogant i know, but its got enough poke to stay with a new GTR and frankly scare me silly). My aims for this car is to keep it stock looking, some sensible chassis tweeks and generally enjoy the whole GTi experience again.

However, there is something i would like to "improve". Induction noise, or "roar". I am also aware that what I am asking for may not be achievable without going the ITB route. Im happy with the noise the stock exhaust makes, but id just like more induction noise....

The car did have a induction kit fitted when i bought it (using the K&N adapter pipe and a shagged Green filter) which to be honest, ive never liked the look or design of. Its far to cramped behind that headlight. I know you could relocated the battery to the boot, but again, id like to keep it as close to standard as possible.

So i refitted the standard air box and piping, but as could be expected, that has now removed pretty much all the induction roar from the engine.

I know its a fairly insignificant thing this "induction roar", but for my personal taste, i like the induction noises that N/A engines make and I think it adds to the overall experience of having a "classic" N/A car like the GTi.

One idea that i have pinged around my head is to modify the standard air box. Maybe cut some slat in the top rear portion of the cylinder to let out a bit more noise whilst keeping the cold air feed from the front of the car?

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Like I say, I know what I am asking may not be possible, but all ideas are welcome

Cheers

Nick

Standard 8v engines never seem to have much induction noise unfortunately, certainly not compared to the likes of a GTi-6, and what little there is gets muted by the standard airbox setup. I'm not convinced that cutting the airbox makes a huge amount of difference, but I do have a airbox that has been drilled presumably for the same reasons you're wanting to that you're welcome to for the cost of postage if you want to give it a go without butchering your existing (presumably unmolested) airbox.

Thats a very kind offer, thanks.

I did notlce that myself (that the 8v is a pretty quiet engine induction wise). However, whilst Miles and I were fettling to get it running right, we did run it with the airbox disconnected from the AFM (not ideal i know) but it didnt sound too shabby.

It goes without saying that the advantage of the stock system is that is a sealed box that draws a nice vacuum when on WOT.

Im thinking that if i modify the front grill so that the stock intake hose to the airbox has more of a direct draw to the outside air, and adding a very mild "ram air" effect when upto speed to counted the reduction in vacuum within the box if I were to make an opening to release a bit of noise.

Having just taken if for a little spin without the hose that goes from the grill to the box, it does make a nice little noise. Im wondering if the airbox can also act as an amplifier to the induction noise if modded in the right way??

Brother had a 182 with a CDA/BMC enclosed filter which sounded rather fruity! :P Might be something to consider and as it's enclosed, it doesn't suffer from sucking in warm air (with correct ducting) like the usual K&N / Green Filter open type.

Bluebolt was selling a brand new one on here for 1/2 price, pm him if you're interested? ;)

I fitted one of those to my 182,sounded awesome.

I do think though that its down to the engine/exhaust.

My dads s1 106 rallye with a green induction kit sounds like its on carbs!

The only "induction" filter worth fitting in my eyes is a BMC one as already mentioned...

Which I also have one of still unused and in tampered with but in a tatty box as I bought it before I went GTI6 and ITB's... PM me if you're interested

They do give you a different grunt the rest, and this one was bought for a 1.9 8v.

Mine has a little roar between 2-3k, std airbox with k&n element, but most importantly no afm, this made quite a difference.

My 8v is on weber 45s, it sounds incredible, I'd says it's up there with the best sounding cars in the world.

However it's useless trying to drive it anything other than flat out, the throttle pedal is more like an on and off switch :D
