Non Starter - Has Spark, Comp And Fuel

Hey guys

 

Yet another non starter thread.

 

Car is a 1990 1.9GTi with 135,000 miles.

 

Ok, yesterday i was sorting a few non engine related electrical issues (slow wipers etc) and re installed the SAD after a bit of fuel consumption trouble shooting had been sorted.

 

The car started fine as per usual. Ran on idle until up to temp to make sure the fan kicked in as and when it should (Which it did). Car ran perfectly and idled exactly as it should. Decided I needed to pop to the shops. Drove the car 200 yards to the junction on the main road, drove completely fine. Got to the junction and car cut out. Tried to re start and wouldnt fire. Thought id maybe flooded the engine. Towed it back to my place and left to this morning.

 

Tried to start again, cranks fine, wont catch..... not even a cough.

 

Leads are in correct order. Checked spark on all 4 cylinders, all spark well.

 

Checked fuel pump by disconnecting fuel line from filter to rail, pumps out fuel fine. Checked voltage to pump, its getting 12 volts on cranking.

 

Checked injectors, getting a pulsing 12 - 14 volts ish.

 

Tried cranking with wide open throttle and then checked plugs. All 4 are damp and smell of fuel.

 

Compression has always been good on this engine (high 180's) and rechecked, All good and well within 10% of each other.

 

Car has recon ATP AFM and recent dizzy (Fitted by Miles) and i recently fitted new CTS to solve over fuelling. Ever since it was at Miles's place, its run like a dream (was there tuesday just gone)

 

Dizzy cap and arm were replaced in Nov last year. Checked for dampness, all dry.

 

I have completely run out of ideas now, and I have no idea about auto electrics.

 

Can any one suggest what to check next. If its a suggestion around electrics, you will have to really spell it out for me, like I say, I have little to no experience of diagnosing electrical faults on cars.

sounds like you have no spark,remove plug and check for spark might be a coilproplem or loose connection

what about timing could the distibuter have spun run putting it out of time enuf not to run

It's possible, but it's just really odd that it was running perfect one minute and now won't start.

 

It's gotta be something daft, duff relay or a connections come loose, however I can't find anything obvious

just methodically go through it as any electrical fault will be found with a process of elimination.

 

i am sure you will find it to be something simple in the end.

Dont suppose you could suggest somewhere else to start, because ive covered all the places i can think of?

Have you tried pulling the fuel pump power and cranking it for a bit? I have an issue where if I start it mine, run it for a bit and stop it won't restart. But if I pull the power on the fuel pump it starts again. Doesn't sound quite the same as yours as usually from cold mine fires up fine but might be worth a go.

Now solved

 

Turned out to to be the ignition amplifier had failed. Even though the plugs had a strong spark out of the engine, I would guess that when you add compression into the mix it wasn't a strong enough spark. Also looked like that I could do with a new set of leads as the king lead has some signs of corrosion in the connections.

Now solved

 

Turned out to to be the ignition amplifier had failed.

 

Out of curiosity , which brand was the failed ignition amplifier ? OE blue Bosch MTR 01 or some other ?

 

(blue Bosch amp rarely fails ... black Bosch not so good , Ducellier this ones i found to be most problematic , Valeo good , Magneti Marelli good ...)

It was a ducellio one that failed

Im guessing this is the black bosche unit you refer to.... so ill have to wait and see how i get on with it

As usual , avoid Ducellier amps (it also makes some el. noise when combine with other type coils .. it even misfires when combine with a one specific coil make !)

 

Ducellier coils are good (at least i haven't had problems with them ..) , but ignition amplifiers - not so good .. i had a few cases similar to yours - has spark (but not good spark - weak one ..) , has fuel , has pressure , has good battery and terminals , spins good etc. etc. but wont catch = every one of them had a Ducellier amp. , just fitted the blue Bosch one with new heat sink jelly and fixed for good . Starts straight away .

Doesn't look like a black bosh on a pic though .. it says on the item description that it's a Bosch item ...

 

I've had a few failed , but usually starts slowly until progress ... mostly misfiring with black Bosch .. who knows yours might be good/tested
