For The First Time In A Long While I Find Myself With No Car

Recommended Posts

Bugger I say!

I serviced my BMW yesterday and after spending £90 on parts and oil the engine decided its had enough in life. Its got no power and sounds like every valve is rattling around in a metallic box. I still drove it home and kept the engine going with some heel and toe action but it sounds terminal enough to not bother sending it for its MOT today.

That leaves me with no working cars and I feel about as empty as my bank account. Anyone else finding that this year really sucks?

Only option is my 205 sorrento and hopefully I can get that working without spending too much money. Its needs a fair effort to get working though as its lacking an engine and suspension. Borrowed a car to get to work in the meantime so not all doom and gloom.

I'll strip the beemer for parts and scrap it as its got some brand new tyres and other bits only a month old grr

Roll on 2011!

Sucks doesn't it mate.

The cambelt snapped on my daily driver today so its going to the scrapyard in the sky. :D

Either using my 1.9 as a daily driver or getting a diesel, can't decide.

Bugger indeed, maybe a cheap ~£500 runabout is in order until you get sorted out?

Its Very Very frustrating!

At the moment I have no car and have been asked to fix a charging issue on my sisters 1998 VW T4 Transporter, basically the regulator is knackered on the alternator, a replacement alternator is £154 + Vat with it being a later chassis with a valeo unit :D bloody german car tax !!

I can't get to anywhere that can tell me if it can be reconditioned today either :)

back on topic i just sold off a couple of cars and woke up the morning after and realised i had to walk to work :D

luckily its quicker to walk than drive but it still left me feeling empty.

Dont know what to do really. I am borrowing a car at the moment so that dampens the urgency to buy something in a rush.

Going to have a look at the BMW at the weekend to see if its something like the injectors firing at the wrong time or something obvious, then make a call on the cost to repair. Its an old car so I have to make a judgement on whether its worth keeping going.

Until recently I had an A4 2.5 TDI, I was very aware that it was potentially a ticking timebomb in that if ever anything big went wrong with the engine then that was pretty much that. I sold it and now have a 1.9 TDI, which worries me far less.

OK you have a 205 that you could throw together, but as we all know it is rarely that simple when it comes to 205's, and if you have to rush and then struggle you'll probably end up hating the thing.

That timebomb feeling is awful. I sold my E39 535i Sport because it made me nervous even though there was nothing wrong with it. I feel much more comfortable in the 307 and I know that the CTI got fettled right first time and is not a timebomb, which is why I am reluctant to up the boost or tinker much more.

I couldn't really do the £500 run into the ground approach as I would probably just worry, however I would be happy with one for the (embarrassingly) short journey to work and back. The risk of that is it will become a money pit and when it goes bang you feel wounded and rush into buying another £500 potential turd.

The best time to buy a car is when you don't need to (unless you are Baz and it is whenever someone waves one under his nose!)

Chin up Kev, you might have one of those great moments where you realise it is something simple and will cost you pennies for another years motoring. Fingers crossed for you :)

Batfink,

You're welcome to borrow the XRad van during the week  I only use it at the weekends really

Get the 205 over to mine and use the garage to fix it up. At least it'll be warmer.

Can't take too long my 309 will need a home there when the last panels are sprayed up

edit: can't believe this is only my 2nd post! Major lurking alert!!

I feel your pain not having a car.

I've got two perfectly serviceable and wonderful cars with no problems. However, due to a stupid rule I'm currently not allowed to drive them for a short while for "medical reasons" despite not having anything wrong with me. :)

I'm taking the car to the bodyshop for them to access the damage shortly.

If they write it off and I get a big chunk of cash I can use that to either repair it or buy another car.

My brother has a 106 van and is going to sell it in april so I might hold out and buy that off him. Its a 1.5 non turbo diesel and is rather economical
