HERMAN 33 Posted February 18, 2010 I am just in the middle of fitting a GTI6 to my 205 and I was wandering. Is it best to tell the dvla that the engine size has changed to 2.0Ltr and then just change the engine number at a later date/ If i tell them that the engine type has been changed then they might make me have a IVA/SVA or am I worrying about nothing? Just wandering what other people have done? Thanks Neil

Just wandering what other people have done? Thanks Neil I've rarely ever bought a modified car with any ammendments to the DVLA log book. If it's the same capacity, such as a 1.9 GTi 8v, changed to a 1.9 Mi16 then the main issue is informing your insurance company to ensure you're covered. If however you are putting a 2.0 into a car registered as a 1litre then there would be a new issue of road tax evasion. Generally, if you notify them of a change of engine they will want an engineers report.
Silky 33 1 Cars Posted February 18, 2010 I had to change the engine infro from a 1.6 to a 1.9 in my GTI. I took pics of the engine fitted, pics of the engine number and then got a friendly local garage to write a letter on headed paper to say the installation was road-worthy and that they had done all the checks on it I then sent all of this to the DVLA and got my new V5 back within a few weeks
Atari Boy 11 Posted February 18, 2010 I did the same a Michael, I sent off the paper work with a hand written garage receipt, I got the V5 back within three weeks I think.
Veero 1 Posted February 18, 2010 (edited) I wrote to them saying I did it myself, included clear pictures, engine number details and a cover note explaining that I am a qualified engineer and could provide a report if required as I had done it myself I had no proof otherwise. Paperwork came back amended in about 7 days without question which must be some sort of record for the DVLA. Edit: Ah yes about tax, generally if you are going to a more expensive tax bracket they won't care too much, if you are dropping to a cheaper one they will want chapter and verse. littlelise 2 Posted February 18, 2010 What do you do if you change it and you are not a qualified mechanic, do you have to be mates with one? >_<
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted February 18, 2010 Just take it to someone with experance of these at least, I say it's a good idea as no one want's badly converted car's around, which you'll be surprized how many are like this, But 50% of the time they are not even Modded Only thing with 6 engine's, well most Iron block ones the engine number Rust's away
marksorrento205 80 Posted February 18, 2010 Only thing with 6 engine's, well most Iron block ones the engine number Rust's away This is the problem I have. Is there a way around it? Apart from using the engine no from my 306 rallye and if the question it say the rallye has had it changed??
PVFCpug 6 Posted February 18, 2010 I have submitted mine with no visible engine number and they have accepted this. When my last new Mi went in it simply didnt have one!
Edp 67 3 Cars Posted February 18, 2010 I've never told the dvla about anything. The insurance is different but the dvla? Just more chance of grief if you tell them IMHO

Yes, stamp your own unique number into the block using number/letter stamps, and hey presto there is your new engine number. Common on original mini engines, as if you have the block decked, the engine number goes too.
pugpete1108 62 1 Cars Posted February 18, 2010 the dvla still have my log book from when i tried to tell them about the change from 1.6 to gti6 engine. i have got to get round to sending them a letter from a 'proper authority' to proove the conversion is done right. in hindsight i wouldn't have bothered telling them, but its just the tax bracket thing really that made me do it. Simes 248 2 Cars Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) I've never told the dvla about anything. The insurance is different but the dvla? Just more chance of grief if you tell them IMHO Me neither, My last GTI didn't even have the engine number on the V5 and hadn't since new. HERMAN 33 Posted February 20, 2010 Thanks for the replies guys as I am a qualified mechanic I am going to go down the route of writing to them. I can also just about make out the engine number. Thanks again for your replies. Neil
