Few Little Problems With My Mi16 Conversion!

Recommended Posts

right, firstly i need to know what makes all the red lights on the dash come on when the ignition is at the first two positions, when the engine isn't running.

the reason i need to know is that mine isn't doing this with the mi16 engine, but it did with the original 8v. is there a unit which sends current through all the dash lights to test them in these two positions?

also, when i'm cranking my engine round to see if it'll fire up, theres a definite slowing of the engine on every 2nd or 3rd revolution, what could this be? :S

thanks in advance for your help!

Will

I will put money on your sensor loom not being plugged up properly. Check to see the low oil pressure warning light is plugged onto the right sensor and the same for the coolant warning light. If in doubt go around earthing the wires out one by one until you find out what does what.

As for the vacumn take off, its on the front of the inlet manifold near to the throttle body. There are other take offs there, one of which being the vacumn pipe for the fuel pressure regulator. Some very early Mi inlet manifolds didnt have the vacumn take off for servo assist, I have come across one before and had to change it for the correct item.

ok, cheers for the advice. it seems asthough atleast 2 of the lights are correct, but still no red lights!

im guessing the oil pressure light is wired into the smaller or the two pressure sensors on the front of the block, and the actual pressure gauge is wired into the larger of the two?

hope im right!

This is correct.

The warning lights you should get with ignition on are

STOP

Battery light (brown wire connected to alternator)

Oil pressure light (as above, small sender)

IIRC the coolant light (signifying high coolant temp) does not come on with ignition, but you can trace the right wire by grounding out each wire in turn until the light comes on (although if you still get no where you must either have a blown bulb or a wiring fault).

Also there is no warning light for oil temp (there's literally no bulb in the instruments, and also no sender in the sump apart from the temp sensor).
