Problems When Cold (xs)

Recommended Posts

djinuk

when the xs i drive is cold it is very very hard to drive even with the choke out, is this normal, the car does not have the heat shield on the manifold and the pipe that comes of it, could this be the problem, basically even with the choke out i have to hold revs above about 2k to stop it from stalling until it gets warm, however once it is warm its fine. could it be worth me checking my dizzy timing>?

Are you sure you're not pulling the choke out too far. Mine used to have a 'sweet spot' beyond which it would just kill the engine.

just nipped outside and it seems it will not idle at all (although will start easily enough) unless you have the choke on full,

Try cleaning the carb, get some spray carb cleaner wynns is ok.

Get the engine running take the Black horizontal top off the top of the carb one jubilee clip. and while someone gives it a little revs spray it on the jets and in the carb in general.

This may help no guarantees

As others have said it doesn't sound like lack of the manifold heat shield & pipe, I ran my rallye (very similar carb) without it for the last four winters and have just fitted one for the first time, the main difference I have found is that I now have to run the choke for a much shorter period, 1 minute maybe rather than 3, but it didn't really affect the initial idle from cold. Might still be worth a punt though, I got one for a pound from the local yard. Also hoping it might help with carb freezing which I usually get a lot of on cold wet days after about 20 mins on the motorway.

Also mine runs best with the choke out only a bit, 1 cm or so rather than all the way so not sure why yours needs the full whack.

Haynes do a special manual on carbs published in 2004, local library got it for me, it has a trouble shooting section and I think it covers Solex 32/34 Z1 but maybe a slightly different variant cos IIRC it had an auto choke, might help as I have noticed you are having a bit of troubel with your carb....!

You've had the carb apart recently haven't u? did you refit the cables in the right position, could be the choke cable has too much slack in it?

yea cables etc are all correct, ive had a play and dropped it onto a emissions machine and it appears the carb is running quite rich so ive turned it down a touch , will see how it fends over the weekend, thanks for the help
