Nice write up, only thing I would add (and the way I usually do it) is to drill to 5mm then tap a new M6 thread in place.

This is the way I would choose to do the job, we have no end of problems at work with rivnuts spinning in the holes preventing the bolt from being undone.

Glad i found this thread via the search - gives me an idea of what's going to be involved as this is obviously what's happened to mine - thought it might be a popular issue that's been seen before.

 

Opened my bonnet this afternoon and heard a clunk but didn't think anything of it until i tried to shut the bonnet and realised it wouldn't engage on the catch as it was sitting about 1cm out of line.  Thankfully managed to get the bonnet pushed back into place so i could get it shut again but assumed a hinge had to have snapped for that to happen.
