I just nipped to an engineering place this morning for some offcuts and in a moment of madness asked for 6mm thick.

 

They bent to 90 degrees and nipped it in half for me so I could cut each end to the correct length myself.

 

 

Half the thickness would have probably sufficed as they immensly overkill, but will see how I get on trying to make them work for my application.

 

Bin them wayyyyy to heavy.

 

I used some 3/4" od cds tubing I had kicking about.

either you have a very small wheelie bin or those "offcuts" are bloody huge!

 

standard size wheelie bin. They are 100mm wide. Ideally I wanted 70/75 mm wide so I could pop a couple of bolts in to the cross member.

 

That was just the foot length they had kicking around so I said half it, and then do the bends half again so I can cut them down as close to the bend as I need.

 

I just wanted them to be strong enough without needing to brace anything.

 

Started to remove the bumper now and regretted bothering

6mm plate? What's your radiator made from? Granite?!

 

Roll cage plates are only 3mm.

 

You'll have trouble drilling that stuff, never mind anything else. You really would be better off with something thinner.

My fixing rad bracket is made from 3mm ali.

If it helps, all I did was cut the back of the lower crossmember to allow two little sections of flat 2mm steel to be welded vertically into place. I then cut the plastic lugs off the original fan cowling, and bolted each one through the metal tab with two M4 cap heads each. By keeping the plastic lugs and using a flat piece of steel, you can position the rad first, mark up the holes and drill and fit... and keep the retaining stubs of the original design, of course (mind you the top is a different matter)....
