Opinions On Turbo Engined Track Cars?

Recommended Posts

hcmini1989

Hope this is the right section sorry if its not

Im building a track car but i cant decide what engine to put into it.Its going to be doing 4/5 track days a year and some weekend fun.Now im split between a gti6 lump with 1.9 crank with some piston work and some cams .Or do i go down the 2.0 8v turbo route with a few mods?.

Im asking for opinions on what the 8v turbo is like on the track as most seem to say there abit like driving a diesel is this because they seem to run out of steam early on in the rev range? .How tempramental are the turbo engines ?.I know the gti6 engines can be abit like chocolate

cheers for any help

Depends on a huuuuuuge amount of factors, but with a low-budget and minimal hassle bias I prefer N/A engines. There's a lot more to go wrong with a turbo engine, especially if you're giving it lots of abuse, and when they go wrong it can be expensive and / or a lot of hassle to fix.

I don't like the power delivery on turbo engines either, I don't think they're suited to FWD at all as you tend to get a great surge of torque.. I prefer the more linear (and responsive) delivery of N/A. I'm sure with enough work and investment, and clever management, you can get much more linear and responsive turbo engines, but in the context of a track 205 budget I don't think it's realistic.

Budget track N/a is definably the best way.

Most of the PSA T25 turbos are knackered now and new ones are over a grand or so. You'll end up wanting a Turbo Technics manifold so you can fit a non-PSA turbo on it.

However there is not much between them on a track IMHO

I got a 2.0T that i have found to be bullet proof, once you've got it all to fit in nicely.

Its running 14psi on standard managment so only revs to just over 6k.

It does need the longest box you can get hold of as it max's out at 130(on the rev limit) in no time.(I'm running a 306 2.0 xsi box).

Really i could do with a ZX TD box to get longer legs and a more cruising ability.

You will need to fit a fuel swirl pot for the track as surge will be a problem with the standard GTI pump.

True it is like driving a quick Derv motor. If you like to rev the stones out of a car on the track go for a GTI6,though watch out for oil surge(or is that just the older mi16's!).

Turbo is a cracking motor on the road as the torque's there from 2.5-3k on and can manage 35mpg (if you keep it off boost!)

I would go for the turbo route... (if budget allows)

The 8v turbo runs out of steam due to cam timing and small turbo.

If you fit a slightly larger turbo that can keep up a moderate pressure ( ~ 0.8 - 1.0 bar ballpark ) through out your required powerband and fit a more revy cam (dkz, catcams...) it will loose it's diesel attitude.

If you run turbo's at their peak pressure, the powerband will always be small. So rather build good breathing engine that requires less boost to make some flow (cfm's). The you don't have to torture your turbo to the max, which is good for reliability and gives a wider powerband.

(If budget doesn't allow to upgrade the 2.0 8v, I would go for the gti6)

I got sea-sick watching that. Which of the three was the turbo? On a flowing track like that where the turbo can be kept spooled there's not going to be much difference, but on short, sharp, windy stuff it's hard to beat the throttle response on ITB's. And that whine is so boring compared to the growl/snarl of the ITB induction noise. However, I know you didn't mention ITB's. Having said that, I'd still much rather drive a well engineered N/A 16V then a wheezing 8V turbo.

camera car was the turbo, I thought that track was short and twisty, its only a mile around !

black car that came rocketing past at the end was a 1.9 Mi16 on carbs iirc, blue one should have been a lot quicker tbh, as it was a stripped out gti6 engine, and the cti was full road trim!
