Tracking Problem?

Recommended Posts

driversdomainuk

Hi All

I think my car's tracking is out. Steering wheel's natural position is with a slight left lock for straight ahead. When I try to line up correctly it heads off to the right....as you would expect lol..

It should be a clear cut case of tracking out - but I always thought a car would pull to the side if this was the case? It doesn't - it quite happily sits straight ahead with hands off wheel, albeit with the left lock....

The car is a Honda Civic with electric power steering

Tracking or something else?

Cheers

Rob

Often the tracking can be out and the car still tracks straight when you let go of the wheel.

Steering wheel being on the wonk to go straight ahead when it wasn't previously is a good indication that it's out.

Could be that when the tracking has been adjusted in the past, they've just adjusted the TREs which has the put the rack off-centre and of course the wheel is then not centred either. Or could just be that the steering wheel has been off and re-fitted off centre.

Don;t know how old the car is, but anything modern with ESP of some description usually has a steering angle sensor these days so it is important this reads something near correct. Moving the steering wheel is a bad idea.

most cars have a master spline anyway so you cant move the steering wheel,

If you don't have excessive tyre wear and the car drives straight, then you can adjust the steering wheel via the track rod ends without affecting the tracking, by taking oneside in and oneside out by half a turn at a time.

have you driven the car down the center of a road (ovbiously when no cars are about)?? just to see if its not the camber of the road?
