Speakers And Stickers

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Sorry i'm a bit of a lurker on here.

My 1.9 GTI is under resto at the moment. I'm planning on fitting the original stereo back in it. Trouble is it doesn't work so was going to send it off to be repaired. I've looked about and these seem the people best to do it. Has anybody dealt with them before and are they the best people to sort it out?

http://www.clarion-service.co.uk/cs/Clarion_Radio_Repairs.html

Also what would be the best speakers to put back in the car as the ones in it are shot. I'm not looking to go for a big ICE setup just good speakers to replace the OEM ones.

I also want to track down the original stickes for the engine bay and doors. There was a link on here to a guy doing repros of them but the link no longer works, has anybody any idea on how to get a hold of him. I saw on another 205 site sheets of the stickers but people weren't too happy with the reproductions.

Sorry for all the questions but any information very gratefully recieved.

Thanks,

Mark

Alpine do some nice fairly slim speakers that work nicely, can't remember the exact models but they are a direct fit.

Brilliant, thanks for the suggestions on stickers and will try and track those Alpine speakers down.

Will let you know how I get on with the stereo.

Thanks,

Mark

Pioneer also do direct replacements, two different grades/prices

How much is it likely to cost to get stereo fixed?

Would another working one not be cheaper?

Remember that tapes are rubbish (although I have my original radio fitted so I know where you're coming from lol)

Have you got rear speakers? I don't have any in mine and am looking to get some simple ones put in, just so there is music in both back and front.

Read that 13cm speakers fitted but not looked into it properly and also presume my car isn't wired up for it - trying to weigh up how to do that with minimum hassle.

I have dealt with Clarion Service. The guy that runs it has been in the game for years and actually specced the stereo for the 1FM limited editions. I know they have fixed a couple of 1FM owners head units in the past but they accidentally made mine worse (it worked but was security coded and when it came back it didn't even power up) and it took about 6 months to turn around. But they didn't charge me for it.

It all depends what is actually not working on yours as to whether they can fix it. I would estimate you are looking at a minimum of £60 and you will have to factor in postage there and back too which will be another £20+. Good condition head units exist out there and may work out cheaper.

Sorry to hijack slightly, but my Clarion plays the radio fine but tapes sound terrible - almost impossible to hear any voices in songs (not sure what the technical term is, but it's like listening to only the bass part of the song). Is that something that others have suffered with and is it fixable?

Try cleaning the reader head with a cotton bud with IPA (pure alcohol) on it.

If it's a GTI it will be wired up for rear speakers. Unless somebody has chopped it out at some time. It should already have speakers in place (again, unless someone has removed them) so if they aren't working it may be just some dodgy connections or the speakers have just died with age.

Pugleyrich-if all tapes are the same it has to be pick up as dobboy says-it's not reading higher frequency part of tape

Don't bother with a tape cleaner-bit hit or miss, better to take unit out, remove top cover and get in about it with cleaner

Nomis, 13cm speakers just not fat/deep ones-if speakers are missing completely then cables may have fallen down-UNLESS someone's used part of loom for rear shelf 6x9s (old Skool haha)-if it's just noise you're after then it's not really going to matter what cable you use if you have to patch a bit in

Thanks for the feedback on the Clarion service people.

I do have speakers in the back of mine but they just 'fart' if you put anything through them. I do have a later stereo in there at the moment, but want to go back to the Clarion to keep it original.

Tapes are a bit 'dated' now ;-) Though saying that I have a couple of big boxes of tapes which makes for a great luck dip into my youth! Most of the writing has scrubbed off of them now, so never sure what your going to get...

If its a car you actually want to use then my personal opinion is don't waste your time or money with the original head unit. They are 25 yr old and it really shows.

I have an original in my original car as it still works. If it didn't I'd put something modern in and if it really mattered put the original back in for shows etc.

Hi all,

Thought I would do a quick update and have a question.

I got hold of the Clarion repair people but they couldn't fix the stereo as it was over 20 years old, apparently they can't touch anything older than that as it's a fire risk. I managed to get the stereo to another company who are looking at it.

They've got it fired up but it's asking for a code. I have all the manuals at home (at work at the moment) is the code in them or was it on something seperate to that? I kind of remembering looking through them and don't remember seeing a code but might have missed it.

If the code's missing is it a case of (as I have read on this site) just sitting down and going through all of the combinations, or can you look at the soldering which I believe people have done on there as well.

Cheers,

Mark

If you're stuck I can decode them from the solder links on the PCB :)

That sounds very cool. Will see if I can find the code this evening, if not that would be very useful!

Thanks,

Code was originally on a card-easy to get lost

Solder links or try every code combination-code is NOT related to serial number so none of the online companies can do it

Yeh my card's not with all the other documentation for the vehicle.

Anthony if that's okay I have asked for a picture of the solder links on the stereo and I'll post that up here. Really appretiate that, will owe you a pint!

Thanks,

Mark

P.S Thanks for the advice on the online companies.

Here's a picture of my Clarion's PCB solder links. Would be really grateful if you can decipher the code from that.

Cheers,

Mark

I have recently bought speakers for my 309 GTI's which would be very similar if not identical to a 205 . I just searched Ebay for 13cm speakers and found some Pioneer TS G1321 new in box for £7.50 inc P+P , they were only dual cone rather than 2 or 3 way but they were quite shallow so fitted behind the trim ok . The fronts fitted perfectly into the round aperture in the door but the rears stood a little proud as the hole in the C pillar was smaller , I gently tapped round the rolled edge of the hole to make it a little larger .You have to be careful not to get a tweeter that is going to foul the trim or a large magnet that will touch the outer skin of the C pillar as the 205 is quite restricted here .

I actually bought 4 pairs of these for my 309's and they were still on sale recently but I checked today and they are not listed , worth checking from time to time as they might reappear .
