Diesel Crank

Hey Guys

I gave a friend a pair of my old strut's with Koni inserts and in return he has offered me a 1.9 diesel crank. Is it worth having? I know that people use diesel crank's to stroke Mi's but I believe they are the 2.1's?

Are the 1.9 diesel cranks forged or cast? Would it be worth having one and machining/balancing to suit an Mi for use in a supercharged motor?

I'm looking at sprint type events initially maybe moving to tarmac rally in the future. Will not be doing endurance racing.

I thought they were forged. Easy to tell. Look for a wide flashing/parting line, rather than a thin one as on a cast crank. It will also have less counterweights.

Going back over my notes on forged XU cranks, it appears that only the 2.1TD (XU11D) & T16 (XU10J4TE) are forged. Could be wrong 'tho. Are there any EW forged diesel cranks that would be compatible?

Here's a pic of what Peter was describing about the wider parting line. Cast on left, forged on right.

I have opened several diesel enginges.

2.1 ones are definately forged, 92mm stroke.

I had a 1.9TD this is a forged item with 88mm stroke.

I also had a 1.9 D and that one actually was cast from what I can remember.

But just look for the parting line, it should be like 8mm thick approx compared to 2-3mm on a cast one.

If it's forged is it worth having over the Mi crank for forced induction?

It's less brittle and more ductile than cast iron so I would say it does suit high power applications better.

It's a reason why peugeot have used forged ones in the turbo diesels and the T16.

Cool, So I just need to have everything balanced and get weight differences between pistons and rods to a minimum?

Yes basicly.

Whenever I come across quality info (like the crank differences) I usually save it rather than trying a search later on or even worse relying on my memory as to where I read it! I've also heard of 1.9 diesel forged cranks, but haven't pulled any apart to verify one way or the other.

Cammmy, give them everything that rotates or moves in the bottom end for balancing-crank, rods, pistons, gudgeons, h/bal, flywheel & clutch. (I think that's what you probably meant). Include all the bolts too.

I ran a fully balanced (cast) bottom end at 7800 rpm for a season without any failures.

^Cool, it's a TD crank so hopefully is forged. Going to try get some pics of it.

Thanks for the reminder about giving them everything. I thought of most of it but the bolts etc didn't cross my mind.

Can you explain please what you ment by including the pistons, rods, gudgeons?

Did you mean they should all be the same weight? Or should it be balanced all together?

Sorry if I said something stupid

Can you also explain what is "h/bal", it's a new word for me.

Ideally, all similar components would be of the same weight. Who's to say if the counterweights on the crank are all the same weight 'tho? You obviously can't check that so the rotating & moving parts are balanced as a whole from h/bal (harmonic balancer) to flywheel & clutch.
