Steering Rack Ram

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have had the 306 gti-6 conversion done including the PAS from the 306 on my 205. I have now off course inherited the reduced steering lock when turning right. I was going to replace the Ram with one from a standard 306 so that I get a bit more full lock.

My question is this, I have sourced a ram but the owner does not know what model 306 it came off. Is there anyway of telling ? for example would the ram measurements be different and if so what would the measurement be for a standard 306 Ram.

Thanks

Spencer

if they dont know what it's off it wont be a 6 speed 306.

6 speed ram is shorter when fully extended, around 10mm or so from memory.

standard ram is nigh on identical to a 205 ram.

before doing anything i would check how much clearance you actually do have, likely that it wont be much at all anyway given a standard 205 with 195 tyres will brush the end casing, let alone one 55mm longer.

Thanks Mei, I kept the original 1.9 box instead of the box from the 306. Yes I do have 195 tyres so might there still be a clearance issue ?

Thanks

ah, in that case fit a 205 ram, or 306 as I think they are the same.

you'd be better off with a xsara or 1.6 box than the rather long legged 1.9 box, lovely ratios but as the engine goes another 1250rpm at top end at least the final drive is a bit much.

My 205 was a 1.9 CTI. I have read claims that the box on a 1.9 CTI is that of a 1.6 GTI is that correct ? With my limited knowledge and experience since the conversion when you travelling/cruising at around 70-80 mph it sounds and feels like it wants another gear. Don't get me wrong at that speed its not lacking power and accelerates very nicely. I had been contemplating the VTS box but there aren't many floating around

Thanks
