[project] Mini 16v Turbo Drag Racing Car

Recommended Posts

Tom Fenton

Thought I'd pop some pictures up, some of you may find it interesting.

Car was built last year in order to develop the engine for another drag racer. However we got a bit carried away so decided to use all the lightweight bits and win a class at the Mini showdown in July. Currently produces 220bhp @ 7000rpm, hard cut rev limiter at 9200rpm. 1/4 mile with me driving best time of 12.79s.

In no particular order

Ti front subframe, weight 11lbs.

Thats quite outrageous. I have a friend with a 180bhp Kad 16v which is mental enough and way beyond his driving ability lol. Somethings gone wrong with it though so he has put his spare (rant!!) 160bhp ish one in for now so he can do the odd track day. http://www.moose-motorsport.co.uk/

Awesome. Loving the Ti, are you a machinist or Cad engineer by any chance?

I must point out the fabrication was not done by me, done by a guy called Carl Austin who also owns the car, my involvement has been sorting out the EFI/turbo/control side of things, bolting together, and then driving it.

Gearbox is a straight cut dog engagement box with a plate LSD. It did a full season of drag racing last year, nothing broke yet.

I remember lurking on Turbo Minis to watch the original build of this, looks like a fantastic piece of kit!

How long do you think it'll be before Carl sticks another engine in the back though Tom?

Fantastic tom, I absolutly love it, cant help think what its capable of as a full on drag car, ditcthing all the road legal stuff, I suppose te limmiting factor with this particular car is the size of the wheel you can fit, whats it like as a road car? i mean in the rain must be a complete no no with the airfilter getting soaked, and is it quite drivable? Cheers Phill

TBH it only added about 20kg to the weight of the car making it road legal, so adding lights etc, so it would not make a deal of difference.

Its really a drag car thinly disguised as a road car, you could drive it on the road and I have done once, but its just plain mental, standstill to 110mph in a 1/4 of a mile.......

For those that might be interested we went to the rolling road with this the other day to swing the cams and see what happened. The result was 214bhp up from 204bhp on 0.5 bar boost pressure, and 235bhp on 1 bar boost pressure, although rolling road figures can only ever be taken with a pinch of salt.....

They're Carls new Force Racing 13" split rim wheels with new design centres, having them all different colours allows people to see what each colour looks like, as well as drawing attention to them as a marketing exercise!

Carl likes the black best, I personally like the gold.

I actually prefered it on the 10's rather than the 13's. But does look a lot better painted. Well done. Saw this at pugfest and it is really as good as it gets!!!

A small update to this, I was at Avon Park this weekend drag racing, running on wide soft hoosier slicks, managed new personal bests of 11.96 on petrol, and 11.80 with a shot of gas.

To say I'm happy with that is the understatement of the year, the 11.96 was also a 1.79s 60ft time- I've never felt the car launch like it, it was awesome!
