Which Gearbox? Opinions Required.

Hi guys.

I know this has been a post in the past, but id just like some more recent feedback and opinion on which gearbox to use on my UK spec Rallye.

Ive recently purchased a UK 205 Rallye, in which im fitting a xs 1360cc alloy block engine. Do i go:

1) RALLYE - Pros: Stay in 2nd from 15 - 75mph, Good 5th for the motorway 2500rpm at 75mph. Cons: Gears too long for good acceleration.

2) XS 2CA 08 - Pros: Nippy, exciting acceleration. Cons: Too many revs for motorway cruising >4000rpm at 75mph.

I also have an AX GT gearbox which i believe is the same as the XS, but happy to be corrected.

All advice and comment gratefully accepted

James

I'd go with XS myself.

TU9

954cc

2 CA 06

TU1

1124cc

2 CA 02

2 CA 07

TU3

1360cc

2 CA 05

TU3S

1360cc

2 CA 08

After 1989, the gearbox codes were modified. I have only been able to obtain one - the TU3. Its code changed from 2 CA 08 to 2 CA 40. The ratios are unchanged though.

Depends what you use the car for the most....

This might help with identifying your 'box http://www.suzukituning.com/PSA/MA5%20Gear...a5gearratio.htm

Might be worth considering a box from a 1.1, don't know if they offer a happy medium or not, but personally i'd go for the xs 'box to maximize acceleration as thats what the cars all about, not motorway cruising!

xs box, i hated the rallye box it ruined the feel of the car! just stay at 65 on motoways then about 3k or it might be 60 at 3k just dont do 90 for ages at 5k with a loud zorst......

Cheers for the fast replies. I just needed someone else to agree with my thoughts. XS gearbox it is! (it is also less work for me!) The AX GT box can just be a spare.

Your right GazRallye. Its a rallye, not a motorway cruiser.

I'd use the XS box, definitely! You can fit fit the 5th from the Rallye box to the XS box which will still give you a reasonable cruising gear, it won't be as tall as in the Rallye though.

Is that easy to do? Is it something i could do myself?

If its costly or something i cant manage, i will probably just leave the xs box as it is.

Cheers

The AX box should be the same as an XS but you can check the code..
