Bilstein Rear Shocks (Racing) Knocking, No Bushes

Recommended Posts

christopher

I have Bilstein rear shocks on my race car.

They don't appear to have any rubber bushes on them, just some kind of open balljoint I think (is this special for racing?)

Does anyone know what type these are? (They are coilovers on the front)

The problem is that when I wiggle them when I'm up on the lift. They knock a little

Is this normal, or is the joint worn or something?

Sounds like they're buggered. You'll need to press them out and measure them up to find a replacement.

Allan,

Which part do I need pressed out Allan the joint?

  • Does this make sense, what I wrote?
  • Are these special bilsteins?

They seem to have rose jointed ends (as opposed to rubber bushes)

The Fronts are coilovers and gold coloured.

I have some GAZ HA's but am I to assume that these are better.

(sorry no experience with Bilstein & coilovers)

I've personally never seen rear billies with spherical bearings but That's not to mean they never did them or that someone retro fitted them.

The ball of the spherical bearing will be in it's own housing, this outer housing will need pressing out of the damper. It may be circliped and/or pushed up to a shoulder, it may just be a press fit.

Higher spec Billies are generally better than Gaz, however if they're 25 year old and hammered to death they may not be so good anymore.... Bilstein charge £80+vat to service a damper

Just seen photo. The bearings will just be press fitted I reckon, the big washer is a fail safe incase the spherical bearing comes loose in the casing, bit of a bodge really. If the bush hole is un- modified I'd recommend fitting a standard bush back in.

Looking again the bit the bush/bearing is pressed into seems to have been made thinner too.

Thanks Allan,

Would be nice to know if these were original from bilstein or not. They definitely look jointed at both ends.

(Obviously I haven't fitted these myself).

These are fitted to a rally car, so must have had quite a bit of stick.

There'll be part numbers on the dampers. I'd say the bearings have almost definitely been added after purchase

I found these shocks which list as Group N.

These look similar. I wonder what those black parts in the picture are for? Offset?

they're 206 not 205.

black parts are spacers so you can use them on standard bolts.
