Turbo Technics Fueling

Just been thinking through a few more aspects of the build, and one problem springs to mind. What do people do about downpipes. If I use a different turbo and manifold, lets say 205 parts and T3 then obviously I am going to have to fabricate some sort of downpipe myself or get one custom made. Does the original TT set up have a special downpipe, or does it have a special piece at the exhaust outlet of the turbo that allows it to bolt up to the standard gti downpipe.

I also guess that a T3 will have a different flange to a T25 anf if this is the case, could you merely weld on the different flange (to the exhaust not turbo!) to then fit the standard downpipe.

This is obviously a bit confusing to me as at the mo as I have nothing to look at or reference to so it is all merely guesswork.

Thanks in advance for anyones help.

Alex

Edited to add: or is the Xu10 downpipe usable and is it any good or is it restrictive. Or does this only mate to the specific xu10 manifold and turbo combo.

For reference:8a9f_1lol.jpgThat is a T3 from an Escort RS Turbo, whether that turbo elbow mounts up to the existing downpipe i dont know TBH (Maybe I'll have the pleasure of finding out first). So yes a custom downpipe would be a good idea anyway imo.

Afaik the 205parts manifolds are built to take T3/T25 flange, looking at that one , the boost pipe will point downwards on a TT manifold, so pipes will need to go under the engine, rather than over the top like on the 406 T.

Found quite a bit of usefull info on the T3 on the net BTW, think it is disregarded some what as it is classed as

'Old skool' technology. have a friend also with a RS Turbo, just trying to get a passenger ride myself soon'ish

But if you say the lag is minimal than I happy with that.

Lots of different 'trim' version's with this turbo also it seems, just trying to get aqaunted with all the lingo that goes with it too.

Im expecting when I install my 205parts manifold and new Turbo for it to not mate up with my existing downpipe made for the XU10, as the new 205parts mani places the Turbo more central to the tunnel i think.

So a second pipe will have to be made I guess.

The TT uses the standard downpipe.

I have just brought a system from DES developments and the fit is excellant, I belive he will make downpipes to suit whatever turbo you have.

I have found quite a lot of info on the T3 too, I personally think that it would do a very good job on the xu10 engine. I know it is supposed to be "old skool" but to be honest I don't want something that drives exactly like a n/a car anyway, surely the turbo rush is what it makes it more exciting.

All I can say from my rides in the escort rs is that it is bloody quick and torque steers everywhere, but it was such a laugh to be in, you put your foot down wait for it to start to spin up and....whooosh!! your off trying to keep it in a straight line down the road haha. Maybe thats the exact opposite of what some people want out of a car but I reckon a large part of that is down to the chassis set up, escorts aren't renowned for their handling prowess.

When do you reckon you will have yours upgraded by?, my aim is for early summer next year, but we all know how projects turn out.

What you planning to do about engine management, I think I have convinced my self to get the KMS and get it mapped properly unless you know of a decent cheaper option such as remapping the existing ecu and where to get it done at, but i'm not sure whether that is almost false economy depending on how much it costs and what the results are like, I can't wait to get stuck into this now!! ;)

Thats cool, if des developments can do them and they arent to expensive, I would rather get something woth a decent fot rather than a bodge up that I have made.

Yep, that's exactly how it is on a 205 TT - boost pipe goes down under the engine (between sump and gearbox) and then back up the front through the FMIC and into the TB.

Do you think that has it's advantages: Shorter inlet tract?/pipe stay cooler not being in engine bay?

I Think that will work fine with my IC set up though:D

Do remember seeing a pic of the route a while back..

Bales: Yeah probably early spring/sumer, engine will get a full rebuild also. I plan to have the ECU 'chipped'

Its just taking some time to acquire :):(

have a word with Gav I think @ www.thedervdoctor.co.uk/, sure I read an old post that said he could supply chips :)

But if you got the dosh, then why not splash out on something a bit tastier, im just of the opinion: the less things to go wrong etc, so chip tuning seems ideal for me, not after mega power. ECU @ 1bar TT mani and T3 should well see 200hp, and we all now that its torque that counts :P

Torque steer is not an issue running 150hp, so cant see it being to bad with an extra fifty GG's B);)
