Steering Judder

My 205 1.9 GTi has just started developing an irritating quirk. At low speeds I get juddering through the steering wheel, which is still present at high speeds but less noticeable (probably masked by other general vibrations).

 

I've checked the wishbones and drop-links and there's no play on anything there. The tyres look fine to me (unless I've missed something). I'm at a bit of a loss to what the cause could be.

 

The overall handling also feels flawed and lacks the usual tightness and confidence. I'm sure it gets quite understeery on right handers too.

 

Any suggestions welcome!

Check rack to subframe bolts are tight, track rods and ends and of course tracking

Worse when cornering / applying power ? Check driveshaft intermediate bearing retaining bolts..

The steering rack is attached solidly. Couldn't really check much else with today's weather.

 

It does it when driving straight, and isn't any different when cornering. So maybe inner CV joint is looking possible?

Maybe worth taking to your mot place, their steering shaker should show up any problems. And keep you dry!

Could the hub nut have come loose allowing the front wheel bearing to separate a little .Might be worth checking the tyres over for carcass failure or being well out of balance .

It turned out to be the tyres. I didn't really look at them properly when I removed them before, but when I inspected them today, they were both in a right state. I knew they were getting low on tread, but the amount of loss on the inside edges was nearly through the rubber. Not really visible when they were on the car. So put some new ones on today and it's all back to normal.

If they're that badly worn on the inside then I'd check the tracking ASAP. Even with 309 wishbones (ie more camber than standard) you shouldn't see excessive wear on the inside edge.

They were pretty equally worn on both tyres, so if it is a tracking problem it does suggest a toe-in/out problem. The other possibility is that I drive over a lot of speed cushions, so the wheels are always going over an angled surface which could add to this sort of wear.
