Be4 Gear Ratios For 205 Tu3S Rally Car

Recommended Posts

NEMCA

Hi,

Can anyone advise a good gear ratio set up for a BE4 gearbox in 205 TU3s rally car. I've recently converted to a BE4 gearbox from a picasso. However, it is still standard ratios and I wish to make some changes as I now have the time.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Neil

Find yourself a be4 cwp with a higher ratio, such as a 4.2, 4.42, 4.5, 4.7, 4.93...

I have found a few 4.93's & 4.7's in the past and a few 4.5's.

I think most gearsets are very similar in ratios

Hi Welshpug, ref. code - do you mean around the clutch fork area? I may have to get the sump guard of to check that!

Obviously the lower the CWP ratio the better for my needs but having had it out on Sat/Sun for the first event I find it is holding onto the gears for too long (2nd/3rd). I would like to get up the gears quicker and lose less revs in between.

I have been told the 206gti180 gears are a good place to start, can anyone confirm this?

the gearset would be good but not the Final drive, 138 gti gearset is the same but a longer final drive again.

1st gear looks longer/different in the 180 (does that make sense).

Ok, so maybe a 206gti/180 gear set with as low a CWP as I can find?

Cheers

Thanks for your help so far

And

Gti180 has the 2.99 first gear the gti 130 has the 3.4 first (worse than the ma) I ran with full be4, gti180 gear set on a 4.9 there is also a 5.1 and they don't cost the earth genuine, (be4 stuff is the only stuff available from pug) I have just changed tho keeping the gti180 first and second plus input shaft and then gti6 3-5th and a be3 5.1 final drive it's so much better (so a mix of be3&4) some don't like the gti6 gears saying they are week but still easy to get and very close to the qualife set. If I do get repeated failures tho I will just switch to the qualife gear set.

Ok, cheers for that info - I could possibly have access to a GTI6 box shortly.

Out of curiosity, what spec engine are you running?

And

A tu3 still 1360 alloy block, putting about 130bhp at the fly, heavily modfiyed head, grp A Pistons, longer steel rods, tu5 late head, Kent pt02 (285 deg) cam soon to be changed for a pt03 as every one is going 16v, and feed through twin 40s,

To get the gti6 3-4 gear on the be3 shaft altho they are the same spilne the gti6 has a double spline as be4 so requires one of slides ground out spooks did it for me free as I got the final drive from them but the stock the 3-5 gears as sets to sell ready to fit in be3 5speed boxes. I just did it over winter and the 2 events I have done this year it's so much better hens why I am going wilder cam as had it in a few year ago and I couldn't drive it but think it will work now.

Lol, Sounds like a well sorted set up. Is that a silver top tu5 head? What ignition system are you running it on? Did you have any piston/valve clearance issues?

I fitted a Newman 290 cam and the valves were touching the pistons - had to pocket them!

Yeah sliver top but fitted with black top cam and followers, think it's the best head they did that's still readily available and has the bigger valves, it's on a modified dizzy from H&H really needs bodies and ecu tho next car maybe, only issues I had was the piston hitting the head so combustion chambers are completly altered but Pistons have a valve cut out that are fine for the 285 deg cam time in at 106-108 deg will find out with the 310deg one soon not much more lift just duration with it need more top end the gti6 5th and 5.1fd is 105mph @7500rpm
