Is this the kit from ebay ??

No mate this one is not from ebay, got it from someone i know, it was taken off another car hense all the damage. (you'll see what i mean)

My mate has just bought one from ebay though, it came from birmingham, think the guy has got some dimma moulds because they look like proper dimma ones but they are thinner.

Right time for an update.

The o/s/r quarter is now on and all blended in.

P100708_1750.jpg

P100708_175001.jpg

Sorry about the lack of pics will do the stages when i fit the n/s/r quarter.

Right now on to the front bumper, i nearly threw it in the bin, but i wouldn't let it beat me.

some one had already repaired it, very badly, they put plates of steel on the outside and just filled over them, then the plates had rusted and lifted all the filler.

P230608_212401.jpg

P230608_2124.jpg

P230608_212402.jpg

see what i mean.

here are the stages of repair

fisrt of all i got all the old filler out

P250608_1902.jpg

i then replaced the top part with a original gti bumper and glassed all the split back together.

P280608_1310.jpg

P280608_1421.jpg

i then glassed the whole out side of the bumper, then skimmed it with filler and rubbed it down.

finished bumper.

P100708_1746.jpg

done the same with the rear bumper aswell,

rear bumper complete.

P100708_1731.jpg

if any body has got ant question please ask i will be more than happy to answer them.

Great work rescuing that bumper. I'm sure most people would have just junked it.

I'm impressed with the fixing of the various parts!

Have you considered smoothing in the vented section of the rear quarters to give a slightly different look to normal?

right another update.

first thing to do was to prep the n/s/r quarter to fit the new one.

P140708_1515.jpg

P140708_1516.jpg

next was to stick the new quarter on, i stuck mine on with epoxy resin.

the panel has been stuck on and held in place with rivets.

P140708_164701.jpg

P140708_1648.jpg

P170708_2133.jpg

P170708_213301.jpg

P170708_2135.jpg

once i had removed the metal plates and old filler it looked like this.

P170708_2156.jpg

next stage to do will be to bond the n/s skirt on,

this is the mock setup of the skirt on.

P070708_1907.jpg

also another thing done is i have cleaned up and painted the gearbox.

(Had nothing to do in work so just done it for somethin to do)

P110708_1659.jpg

well the car is coming together slowly, will be picking up the engine and a few other things soon.

I'm enjoying this thread :D It almost makes me want to revive the kit that Matt is/was selling - it's a peach compared to the one you have!

Technical Q's - have you mixed that epoxy resin with some chopped strand or filler powder, or did you get it ready mixed in paste form?

Will you be using anything to fill the voids between the original bodywork and the kit (like 2K expandy foam)? Or just leaving it hollow?

Any Dimma kit would be in better condition than mine, :D

the epoxy has been mixed with finely chopped strand and wood dust, we have used this in the past when making the hovercraft and racing boats and works really well.

i will be leaving gap empty due to not wanting to add more weight to the car.

Thanks for that, I'm always trying to enhance my knowledge :D

I've used polyester resin/chopped strand before, with similar rivets, but clearly epoxy is the way forward.

thats no problem mate.

i have used polyester resin before but have not got on well with it, people say it is easier to use than epoxy, but i find epoxy easy to use.

polyester resin doesn't go off as hard as epoxy, i have always has good results with epoxy, exspecially with it's bonding capabilities, it is more expensive though but dont mind spending the extra cost as i know it will do the job properly. the epoxy i have been using is the west systems one.

i don't want the panels to flex on the joins as it will then cause the filler blending the two panels to crack, which would make it look really bad.

the resin work is more time consuming than anything, got to make sure the prep work is done correctly and that you have everything ready as you don't want the stuff going off on you.

ryan

sorry if i babbled on a bit, its 1 in the morning and i'm half asleep. :D

Looking good, I love reading projects like this.

I also really like the look of the smoothed rear quarter. I think it makes it stand out as being different, (also because I think it looks cool on the 309)

If you read this Gti6boy, can you post up some side on pics here if Quigs doesn't mind?
