Carbon Fibre Panels

Recommended Posts

right after reading through a few threads i come across one that was on about fibreglass bonnets so on and so forth but it went nowhere. now this has put ideas into my head <_< i know a friend whos son works in a carbonfibre factory not even a mile away from me so would anybody be intrested in carbon fibre panels for their mi im thinkin bonnet boot wings doors bumpers door cards anything that can be replaced copied and made from carbonfibre or if theres enough intrest for parts for other cars then theres a possibility for those too. ill find out the phone number have a few words and find out some prices so if your intrested then let me know. lets hope this dont die off like the last thread.

:o well me thinks thats out the window these things aint cheap been on the phone to my local carbonfibre builders brase yourselves.......................................................if 20 people were intrested it would cost £575 per bonnett  ouch. the reason is because this is the top spec of carbonfibre not the run of the mill weave and resin that you get from japan. this company is well invoved with racing companies like aerospace, f1 so on and so forth it would cost £1500 and two weeks work just to make the mould for a bonnet. anyway ive been invited for a tour round the factory to show me how its all made and the difference between a quality piece of carbonfibre and the shxt that people are buying to look like carbonfibre. i think i might just stick 2 fibreglass for now ;) im going to take in both of my mi cam covers to see what he says about gettin those made in carbon fibre me thinks that would be a nice touch under the bonnet on anyones car. so much for keeping this thread alive  Edited by mi8 turbo

I wouldn't even bother replacing the wings TBH. They are so light already! Can't be much over a kg each.

I'm keen to do doors etc in GRP but over here you need a roll-cage to do it. I wouldn't do it without one anyway as they would give zero side-impact protection.

lol i dont think that the original doors would fair up any better than grp. i watched a test of a 20 year old car with a side impact from a landrover. lets just say you wouldnt live either way. the landrover was parked half way into the shell. cant remember the speed exactly but im sure it was something like 50 60 mph.

what about a mini style flip bonnet and wings surely that would shave loads of weight and improve aerodynamics?

ive thought of this idea for my 306 but me not being any sort a specialist in grp or fibreglass moulding im not going to attempt such a big project on my first attempt. would definatly be very cool piece of kit. also the need for some sort of matt to lay on the floor if you ever break down and need to remove the thing  . i think im going to try and do wings n so on before i start to tackle anything big. if the wings come out ok ill try the bonnet if thats ok then the boot then the doors. well if ad when i get a job to cover the funds i need. lets hope my interview on friday goes well. fingers crossed

Personally I would do the bonnet first. The bonnet is super heavy and the wings are honestly so light I'm not sure if I'll ever bother replacing them with GRP.
