Gti Suspension

Recommended Posts

Guest Bigj

I'm building a 1400 endurance rally car based on a 205 XS

I know a fair bnit about the gti/xu car but not a lot about the tu engined cars.

Will the suspension from a 1.6/1.9 gti fit a standard XS.

I'm pretty sure it won't but I need confirmation.

If it won't fit whats the reason why?

Changing hubs etc. isn't an option as the running gear has to be standard

If you mean purely shocks and springs then yes it will fit ok :)

arb/droplinks/wishbones can be fitted with a subframe swap

You can fit gti suspension all round including hubs, ARB, wishbones!

arhhh why didn't someone tell me, :) just gave away hubs and wishbones from a gti

Just out of intrest then will the TU drivehshafts fit the 1.9gti hubs?

TU shafts won't fit 1.9 hubs, only 1.6 hubs.

the struts and springs will fit no problems... thats the set up i've got.

not sure why you'd want to change the subframe for a gti setup as the TU stuff give you a wider track..

But it doesn't use wishbones two wheel terror. wider track isn't everything

GTI setup is much better, i will be changing to the gti setup eventually....

you can use TU hubs, the bottom ball joint fits fine

Can you not bend the rules a bit and say it's based on the Euro Rallye? due to them running the GTi running gear as you'll gain vented front disc's too

I can indeed do that Miles but I need to have the log book from a euro rallye

You don't happen to have one do you ?

what I really need is a written off Euro Rallye and log book so that I can build a clone car.

I can use the twin carbs too which would be nice.

Did they make any RHD Euro spec Rallyes?

All the ones I have seen have been LHD

Nope they were all LHD.

So the rallye in this country doesn't use the GTi setup then?

No <_< .

EDIT: Is the car going to be lower with gti springs and shocks?

EDIT: Is the car going to be lower with gti springs and shocks?

Well if it is its a non starter as far as I'm concerned

Endurance rallies have road rally style sections, regularity sections and forest stages. I don't want to go below standard ride height.

My current 1.9 8v is standard ride height with 160lb front springs which is about the best compromise I can find.

You can fit a GTi front end to a TU shell, but you will need:

1) Spacers between the chassis legs and the front mounts of the sub-frame

2) Move the brackets on the inner wing for the brake hoses

3) GTi long gear rod

Thanks Kev G for the info

But I'm not allowed to fit the gti front end, only to change the shocks and springs

The shocks and springs will fit without any problems you'll just have the mounting brackets for the ARB not being used and the brake pipe mount in a slightly different place.

Also the TD used the GTi wishbones which might be another way around the rules but having not read them I cannot say.

Thanks Miles

I knew all along that what I really needed was a euro spec Rallye

But when this 1400 XS came along for nothing I thought I can't go wrong really.

Because its an endurance car reliability will be far more important that an extra 15 or so bhp
