Are Mi Inlet And Exhaust Cams Interchangeable?

Recommended Posts

Stu

Hi all,

Im whipping the cams out of the Mi over the weekend to swap the lifters out and for ages ive had a tiny 'wobble' at the pulley end of the exhaust cam, ive swapped another pulley onto it to no avail so im wondering if the cam is bent..

Im hoping the journals are still ok, and if they are i intended to swap in my spare inlet into the exhaust, provided they are the same profile.

Im sure i read somewhere that they are interchangeable?

I too thought that they could be interchanged, because isnt the difference only in the pulley number?

You can definately use an Mi inlet cam on the exhaust - just can't remember whether you can do it the other way around (as I can't recall if the exhaust cam has the key to locate the dizzy arm drive)

Well provided the profile is the same, we're good to go.

The exhaust cam (or at least my exhaust cam) has the key way cut for the rotor arm drive so it looks as though the cams are completely interchangeable.

Happy days..

How wrong can one man be...

Here's why you cannot straight swap inlets and exhaust cams..

Hmmm. When I did it for someone they were using verniers, which would be why I didn't see the keyway problem using the inlet on the exhaust. That said, I'm sure that I've read both Mattsav and Petert on here saying that you can use a Catcam 526(?) / Stage 1 (as applicable) inlet cam as an uprated exhaust cam in the future if you upgrade to a bigger inlet.... odd.

Yes see my post in the other area on Stus thread "If you want to upgrade at a later date then with a set of vernier pullies the 526 inlet can be moved to the exhaust and a 527 inlet bought (the 527 exhaust is the same as the 526 inlet, making upgrading easier)." That came from mattsav

no drive for dizzy either

not a concern if you're on aftermarket management and using vernier pulleys though, but I bet it makes belt changes a PITA!

You can swap them but you'll need a set of verniers to get the timing right.
