How Do I Remove Transferbox And Gearbox.

Recommended Posts

Erlend405Mi16x4

Hello, im busy trying to overhaul my engine and other stuff that needs it and I now have the engine out of my x4 and i wish to seperate the gearbox and transferbox from the engine, do i remove one at a time or do i remove them both as one unit and then seperate them? And is there any hidden bolts to look for?

If anybody feels like making a "how to" or know of one please send one my way

1. Remove engine bottom mounting and plastic water distribution unit behind engine.

2. Use allen wrench and remove transferbox bolts from gearbox, this picture might help. There are also some smaller bits and pieces that need to be removed. Then pull transferbox away.

3. Remove gearbox bolts and the bottom support bracket of the gearbox near oilpan. If I remember correctly, one gearbox blt is behind transferbox.

Have you ordered new transfer box seals?? Theres no way the old ones will go back on and if they do they wont last long till they need replacing...i tried being cheap and putting the old ones back on and went through gallons of transfer box fluid a week......they were a pig to get hold of though...i had to wait 20 bloody weeks for them!!!

I have managed to get hold of all the transfer box seals I want apart from the right hand seal, part number 2211 35. It's a typical u shaped oil seal, but neither Peugeot or Citroen stock it any more, and it is such a weird size that (unlike some rear diff seals) I couldn't buy it from seal stockists. The dimensions are 49 x 60 - 5.3 (mm). If anyone can or has got hold of this part I would be very interested in knowing from where so I can get hold of one!

My contact in France regarding transfer box upgrades will be supplying me precut gaskets (cut from Meillor 420 material) for both end plates but he has also sent me templates.

Slightly off topic, does anyone know how you can test whether or not the transfer box oil pump is working? I would like to check that it is before I reassemble it, I think parts are still available for this so I could refurb it if necessary.

Rotate inputshaft or propshaft flange before putting oilpumpcover on the transferbox. Check that pumpgears spin.

does anybody have the correct messures for the rotary seals on the gearbox and transferbox?

ive gotten some measurements on the two gearbox seals ive got 58mm/38mm/10mm and 56mm/40?mm/5?mm

from my pug dealer i only got partnr 20 3121 44 and 20 2209 28 to my transferbox.

Belive there is one more rotary seal in the transferbox does anybody have the measurements for this and can anybody confirm my mesurements?

i might have an (evil and genious) plan on how to accuire some replacement seals for those thats out of production.
