Gti6 Coilpacks With Megasquirt

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know if the standard coilpacks that are used on the GTI6 can be used in conjunction with MS-1 V3 with extra code? I'm planning on using a wasted spark setup by running the 4 coilpacks in 2 pairs with the 2 drivers from the MS.

Can this be done or do i need to find some different coilpacks to use?

can't see why not, after all that's basically what the stock ecu does!

Yes it can just just need the extra resistor (s) plumbing in its all on the forums for diagrams and locations..sorry if it sounds unhelpful, just am at home now

Do you know what extra resistor is required? I already have the 2 drivers in the MS itself, so i guess you mean each driver needs an extra resistor inline to the coil packs?

you can not convert multi coil system to a wasted spark system as in wasted spark the ignition coil for 1 and 4 cyl. must have a common secondary coil and the same for 2 and 3 cyl.

Now... i do not know if the igniters on that engine is of the "smart" or "dumb" type.

But there´s generally no problem in FIREING the coilpacks like the spark is fired in a wasted spark setup. If the coilpacks are dumb you need one VB921 per coil, and then connect the gates(inputs) of the VB921:s in 2 pairs (if there´s a "gate" resistor before the VB921 there should be one per VB921 before connecting them together.).

If they´re smart you can just connect them to the output side of the VB921:s and use the VB921 as plain output transistors without using the dwell settings in MS.

So this is defenitly doable, i would NOT recommend feeding 2 coils out of 1 VB921 though, that is asking for trouble if the coils are "dumb type".
