Hi Christopher,

to be honest ive not even driven the car yet so i will hold off on the 1400cc bottom end untill ive driven it.

Do you know what mods were done to the head? Is there any books or a web page with this info on so I could have a look?

Thanks for the input.

Matt

Matt,

My cylinder head was done by Longman who rescued it after it was butchered by another well known tuner. Longman did a fantastic job, it looked a work of art and was even more free revving after they did it. Christopher is right though, you can easily make it worse rather than better. Stay standard until you have experience of the tracks you will run on and also get used to LHD and the way the car drives. I had all the GroupA/N suspension fitted by Skip Brown prior to going anywhere near modifying the engine. The standard gearbox is also a bit weak for competition use, so I'd want to refurb that with new synchros, brass selector forks etc. Standard o/e brake discs drums will be fine, but a simple upgrade to Pagid RS4-2 pads (really worth the money) will make them totally fade free and work very well from cold.

PS Don't forget that most speed event road going classes need you to have most of the original interior fitted, you can swap the front seats for competition ones and remove the carpets, but you need back seats, door cards, parcel shelf etc.

Better to spend some money on a set of Bilstein's coil overs, Skip Brown dual rate springs,21mm TB's and 23mm ARB ;)

Where do you get the 21mm TB's and 23mm ARB from?

I just found this from 106maxi

http://www.106maxi.co.uk/mediapool/78/788866/data/205Rallye_GrA_Manual.pdf

If I spoke French it would be brilliant!

Well spotted, it's years since I've seen that! The downside is that virtually none of the PTS parts are available in the UK any more, although you can still get some 205 bits on the PTS Boutique site. Bren1.3 on here also has a 205 Rallye rally car which had lots of the works bits including the PTS gearbox, zf diff and shafts. that car used to belong to his late uncle, who bought all the 205 Rallye parts from PTS in Coventry when they were having a clear out, he got me a fair few parts, I wish I'd bought more, but was skint at the time :(

I got my TB's and ARb from Skip Brown, who fitted it all and set it up originally, not sure where you get them these days....

Have you had a look on the 205 Rallye fr site??

I had a quick look on the french forum, but struggled with the language

So most people say that its not worth using the 1.4 xs engine as it doesnt rev as well. Im starting to get a bit worried now as I think my engine might be the 1.4 one your friend owned David! I say this because the top engine mount isnt what I would call "factory" it looks more like a fabricated steel mount than a cast alloy one.

When the xs engine arrives i will measure the height of the block to see how tall they are compared to each other.

The guy I bought the car off is giving me a full spec sheet of the car soon so this might shed some light on the engine.

EDIT* the car does have a "chris astley motorport" sticker in the rear window if this helps!*EDIT

Matt, That's the correct TU24 engine mount. Ah the Chris Astley sticker, then it's probably not my mate's old car. I think I saw your car in Blackpool circa 2008 when I was doing the North West Stages rally and it was parked up on the promenade. Think it later turned up on e-bay. At that time it had had most of the interior removed.

Ive just asked Ricky who I bought the car off where he got it from.

He said "it was a lad from Manchester called tom I think" So that would tie in with what you have said.

Ricky bought it, drove it to the bottom of the industrial estate and back, and then parked it up for 2 years. Every time I went to his unit I kept convincing him to swap it for my mk1 escort... eventually he did!

As for the engine mount, that sounds like good news then! Im glad I now have the option to run either engine now.

Ive found this http://annonces.ebay.fr/viewad/culasse-205-Rallye/5046721386?bu=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.fr%2Fi.html%3F_trksid%3Dp4939.m570.l1313%26rt%3Dnc%26_pgn%3D2%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_from%3DR40%26LH_PrefLoc%3D0%26cmd%3DBlend%26_nkw%3D205+rallye

but im starting to question if its better to build the xs engine without touching the TU24 engine.

Im either looking at this head or a saxo vts head? To be honest, the xs engine would be done as cheap as possible to try it and see what it does.

Just out of interest, have you ever done anything to your engine? How much maintainance has the engine needed over the 20 years you have had it?
