Recommended Posts

Normally it will unstake itself if you simply undo it with a sufficiently manly breaker bar. It should be a 30mm nut.

You'll need a beefy impact gun or a decent length (say 24") breaker bar.

They can be very tight sometimes, be warned!

I find turning the wheel out a little and standing on the Beaker Bar then give it a little bounce does the trick :D (I only weigh 62 kilos)

Assuming you have a new nut to use, just get a sharp cold chisel and cut a notch out of the staked part.

But a decent breaker bar should undo it either way.

Im letting all the bolts soak while i have some lunch hopefully itll loosen up and wizz off with the gun.

If all goes well whats the torque setting when replacing it?

I take it that was using a 3/4 or 1" socket set though?

I managed to shear two, 1/2" power bars on my mates Impreza hubs....

My stuff only goes upto 1/2 inch dude.

For an update the bolt won, i drained my compressor bare three times with the windy gun before i gave up.. going to let it soak for the week in wd40, if it dont loosen next week i may have to give in and pay a garage to do it <_<

1) It is a NUT. Not a bolt. A NUT.

2) Unless you've got a seriously decent windy gun forget it. I've a Chicago Pneumatic decent 1/2 drive windy gun, and a Dewalt 18v gun, but they both probably wouldn't move that. Leverage is whats needed to move it, the right tool for the job is a power bar.

Nope 1/2" drive, just a good quality one.

As tom said, you need leverage, WD40 wont do jack, its just a water displacement, 40th attempt

LOL, the ones I broke where Sykes Pickavant

On the Pug I moved mine with a battery hammer gun I borrowed, I think it was a Snap on one.

Put your shoulders & arms into it or turn it round the tightening direction a little bit, then try undoing it after, this usually helps undoing bolt or nuts for me.

My windy gun is a snap on.

Think I'll have to bite the bullet and stump up for a two foot breaker bar and bring a length of scaffolding tube home from work..

That photo is a belter. I did something similar with scaffold pole to release the hub nut on a clio rally car - when it went it went with a hell of a crack.

Thanks, i remember doing both front wheel bearings on a mates Clio and they were a nightmare to get the nuts off too, ended up using an oxy torch to loosen them up a bit before they cracked off.

By a seriously decent windy gun I meant a 1" drive monster, not a 1/2" one no matter who made it!

i vote with the scaffold pole approach, put it on the end of your breaker bar and lift, it's the way i've always done hub nuts, takes two seconds. failing that a good length of exhaust pipe may also suffice.

Just been speaking (moaning) to my dad about the nut and he looked up with the answer "you tried the leccy gun" after a five minute heated discussion about how i think windy guns are stronger than the battery guns he wondered off to the garage to pull out a huge 3/4" 110v hitachi gun..

Needless to say i got proven wrong  the nut shot off within 5 seconds of the gun trying like it was only finger tight.... im speecless tbh

Happy the nuts off but this is the second time hes been right in the space of a week, my ego cant take that
