I'd be happy with 20's tbh.. Never worked it out but I get 250-300 out of a full tank and that can't be that great : /

I had hesitation problems with mine when I first got the XS.

I found the accelerator pump arm pivot onto the external housing was seized, a quick blast of wd40 and some careful manipulation of the arm was enough to get it moving again, then I applied some lithium based grease onto it, and had two years of problem & hesitation free running.

Regarding MPG, I use my XS as a daily driver and I was getting 30/35 MPG. I'm getting around 30 with the 40's at the moment, but I suspect that might change once I get it back from a rolling road session.

Twin 40's are great if that's your thing, I grew up listening to Group 4 BDA Escorts, as well as many different rally cars with 40's screaming through the forests of Wales, I love the sound of 40's, and always will!

The younger people are used to either fuel injection induction or dump valves and turbo whistling noises. it's just a generation thing!

Throttle bodies are fantastic and fairly maintenance free compared to carbs, if you can afford to go that route, then I would tell you to consider it!

I also grew up with twin webbers and love thm im am totaly old school cars and engines. I have a group n exhaust on and want carbs and cam to go with it. I am pushed towards twin 40s also wanting a xsara vts set up in it so wanna keep the carbs and also run them on that. I would be happy with 30mpg i dont rag my car about. I have the odd pulling off the lights next to 2.0l and pulling away with having a short gear ration in them but thats realy all i do lol 3 gear then tottle along.

ive got some twin dellorto 40 dhlas for sale if you're after some. I used to have the matching manifold for the tu3s but sold it a few years back. That manifold didnt have the waterways, the plate of the manifold just blocked them off.

I agree. You don't need the water way if you are fitting different carbs. Just cut the spur to the manifold off the pipe that runs from the thermostat housing to the matrix and plug the end.
