Is There A Gti-6 Install Guide Anywhere?

Recommended Posts

funkymofo

Once again, I did a search first but either I'm crap at searching or there isn't one.

I'm looking into the possibility of a gti6 conversion for my new toy (1.9 phase 2). I have found many guides/articles on the mi16 installation but none on the gti6 install.

Are there any knocking about the net anyone knows about? Is the conversion much harder than the Mi swap? I'm not too great with the old spanner but I want to do this myself as an oppotunity to learn (aside from the cost factor)

Whats the situation with the exhaust manifold on the 6 swap? Dont fancy bashing the bulkhead so are there any uprated options/angle adaptors available yet?

I've pretty much abandoned all hope of finding a decent alloy mi engine within my budget so I'm trying to decide over gti6 or S16. The relative ease of conversion may just swing it one way or t'other!

Thanks guys, on a side note let me say I would not have even contemplated doing this if it werent for the great info I have already found on this site!

I haven't seen any guides for fitting a GTi-6 engine but its not much different to fitting an Mi imo. Maybe easier but I don't know about the exhaust manifold.

The wiring is the worst part but a few people on here have done this now so you should be able to find some help or get any if you hit a problem.

Graham.

i amin the middle of this conversion with my 1.6 , the only probs i have run into so far is clearance on the master cylinder ( but there is a few ways around this apparently) .

i havent reached the task of fitting the std gti6 manifold yet but i am sure i heard qep will be making a angle plate for the gti6 soon. other than that its get 5mm chopped off the manifold and it should fit ok with the std exhaust

the engine fits the same as an 8v using the 306 mounts but you will need uprated rubbers to stop engine flex .

if you are not using pas then you will need to adapt the alternator mount to use a short 205 alternator belt using the 205 tensioner. (pics available)

i have some info with regards to servicing the 6 engine in pdf format i can send them to you if you want.

i was going for the mi conversion as it is very popular but not being able to find one for the right price i was holding on for, then i came across a xsara vts (gti6)at the scrappy and brought it for 150 quid .

its seems that alot more people on this forum are going for this idea now with some pretty impressive results

pm me if you need any help

cheers

pete

Thats great, cheers to both!

Yeah go ahead and send me everything you have that would be great.

The added reliability of the gti-6 has been the deciding factor I think.

Will go trawling round the local scrappies looking for one in the week, cheers!

email adress is in my profile, or you can just link to the forum if easier so others can get the info in the future!

Jochem and Maxi on this forum have extensive knowledge of the GTi6 conversion. Afaik the exhaust fanimold is not a problem at all as it has lots better fitment then the Mi16 one (ie no bulkhead modifying required).

Only problem could be the electronics which are a bit more complex compared to the Mi16 conversion.

Exhaust manifold and downpipe fits perfect on my gti-6 conv. Better that I could ever get on a mi16.

Have people managed to get the exhaust manifold to clear the bulkhead completly, I had a custom manifold on mine but the last one I helped with I couldnt get the bolt in the lower mount as the manifold was hitting the bulkhead :o

Mine completely clears the bulkhead and if being picky is closer to the subframe than anything else. Without getting a measuring tape on it, it looks like equal clearance on all sides. The downpipe I made myself.

Only issue I have is the gear linkages, I had to bend them slightly as they rubbed the manifold/downpipe connector.

excellent, I am starting to feel increasingly more confident about the swap.

16v205.....I see you live relatively near to me, I may be calling upon your help with the wiring part of the project some time in the future - of course I would get the beers in for your troubles ;)

I'm interested in this as well... I found a brief guide maxi did - it isn't comprehensive, but it is a start. (can't find it now)

Hi guys have done 2 of these would be able to provide answers to any Q's and plenty of pics of the end result and solutions to problems and how to overcome them.

Mine was completed in a weekend start to finish although I spent some time preparing everything first although I was using the car on a regular basis right up until the conversion and have continued to do so since without any reliability problems at all,Fantastic engine...very satisfying job my advice to anyone thinking about it GO FOR IT !

Cheers

That would be great if you could tris... I would be interested to see what is involved, and issues that need to be overcome.

I'm interested in the stuff that is so well documented on the mi16 - exhaust/inlet clearance, wiring etc. (i know it around, but having in one place would be good)

yes, but not if you keep hold of the immobiliser, not entirely sure of the procedure to do either but I know its been covered.
