What Does The Fan Plug Into On A Phase 2 1.9 Gti.

Recommended Posts

My project (205 1.9 gti 1991 )arrived in boxes with quite a few bits missing , I have a little shunt box on the front panel but there isn't a space to plug the fan into , some pics of other cars show another bigger box beside it ,but not all cars seem to have this .

This is the box :

Any help appreciated thanks .

That box is for the relay controlled fan setup diesel (and AC I believe) models use.

Standard GTi has a mini fan loom that plugs into the shunt box (the small black box that the battery positive goes to) and the fan, thermoswitch, earth etc in turn connect to that mini loom.

It is the smaller box it plugs into but not directly.

As Anthony says there is a dedicated mini loom for the fan and it sounds like you don't have one.

Thanks lads that is a great help :D ,there was one space left on the shunt box but the plug was too small for the fan ,will have to have another look ,there is a plug for the switch on the rad so will follow that back next time I'm at the car .

It's colour coded, so the grey fan plug will connect to a matching grey plug on the fan loom.

Had another look today and took a pic of what I have there are 4 plugs and I've followed them all back ,the only terminal left is a nut on the side. I also found this plug that goes down the back of the gearbox in the second pic is this the crank sensor can't find a home for it either !

Ignore that Tdc sensor plug - it's only used by ancient Peugeot diagnostic machine and thus surplus to requirements nowadays.

What's that white plug in the shunt box as that doesn't look right?

Have you got anything plugged into the thermoswitch on the radiator? That'll be on the same loom the fan plugs into.

The light grey plug in the bottom of the shunt box shouldn't be plugged in there. Unplug it and it should fit the fan plug.

The crank sensor doesn't plug in anywhere. It's only used for diagnostic purposes.

Yes I have a plug on the thermoswitch so I take the grey plug out and it should plug into the fan plug ,just as well I haven't put a battery on it yet then could have been nasty ,It was plugged in there already I didn't fit it. Thats would leave a free space on the shunt box, does that seem right ?

Car has been offroad 10 years and arrived with all electrics underbonnet disconnected . Thanks for the help, will see if it fits tomorrow if I get down :D
