will post some pics up soon but i have a few questions

- i have the 205 gearbox fitted which i find too low ratio for everyday use, can i fit the gti6 box? (i have 309 driveshafts if that matters)

- the clutch is very heavy but appears to be a new cable so i guess it the clutch release mechanism which i asssume needs lubricating and will require gearbox removal anyway?

- not happy with the fitted air filter, is there a good solution using oem parts?

Welcome to the club :)

There are many gearbox choices to consider.

1) Yes, you can, driveshafts don't make a difference. However, you will need a lift-to-reverse gearstick.

Also, the RH steering lock will be hindered, so you may want to read some topics on this matter first.

2) It could be that the clutch cover that has gone stiff or the plate is on it's way out (hopefully not literally )

and the cable was adjusted so much that the cover is at the end of its adjustment, causing the stiff clutch

pedal to break the old cable, hence why the new one was installed . Hopefully not the case :).

3) Post some pics of your current air filter arrangement.

Well, the shafts do 'kind' of matter, as the passenger inner 205/309 wont go in a 306 diff, but other than that yeah, ive got a '6 speed in mine and once youre used to the lack of lock its great!

it had a new clutch and cable when the conversion was done (a few thousand miles ago so shouldn't be the cover)

how does the 1.9 gearbox compare to a 1.6 on a GTI6?

current air filter arrangement is basically a foam sock on the end of the throttle body, the breather is just aimed at the foam which means the inside of the car stinks of fumes and is the main reason i want to change it

I had a 6 speed box on my 205 GTI6 but i wasn't happy with the fact you couldn't get full lock so i've taken the advice from a mate of mine and i've gone to a Xsara VTS 5 speed box which i'd highly recommend.

I've had a 1.9 box on a bodied gti6 and have to agree that its not an ideal combination.

At the time I was looking and had some pennies I saw a vts 'box come up for grabs and took it, the diff attached was a bit of a deal clencher, but I'm very happy with it and haven't looked back to change any of it!!

It's nice and close ratio, pulls lovely through the gears and brings the power to the wheels in a nicer ratio, not dropping bellow the power band when changing high up the revs...

I can't speak of the 1.6 'box from personal experience but know a few mates with turbos who run them and they love them. One of them has a '6 box on and he loves that, but only uses his 205 in the summer and at weekends so the loss of lock isn't an issue for him...

i have a 5 speed box from a 306 2L 16v xsi on my gti6 lump, pulls like a mofo through the gears and will hit 135mph +++

i assume these are the same as 5 speed in the VTS, just change the inner drive shaft section on short shaft

S16 engine on a 1.6 box - EPIC doesnt really cover it, really puts the power down, though top end isnt great, Most of the roads i use are country though, else i get stuck in traffic.
