Acceptable Valve Spring Gap Before Coil Bind

Recommended Posts

jims205s16

Hello everyone.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a spare head up for my 1.6 GTI.

I have a Catcam 4900342 I intend to fit which is recommended with double valve springs.

Before I go to the expenses of machining the head for these I thought I'd have a measure up with standard springs.

I have 1.8mm left in the spring at full lift before coil bind which I think is enough but I would like confirmation of this and what is a minimum acceptable.

Thanks Jamie.

Needs to have 0.007" minimum between each coil.

Thank you for quick response. That sounds like I have enough in the spring then which could be a good saving right there.

Would you know what rpm standard springs ect can cope with. I'm Looking to go to approx 7500.

You won't have any trouble revving past 7500 with those springs, provided the rest of package matches.

That's good news then. Thanks for confirming.
