4wd Gearbox Casing

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys

I'm wanting to take a 205 1.9 GTi Gearbox and put my diff/4wd gear onto it. This would result in 1st and 2nd being identical to the 4bie box but 3rd, 4th and 5th would be shortened.

Does anyone know if the G/Box casing on the 4wd is different or if it's just the diff housing?

Alternatively I can get my hands on a BE1 1.6 box and put 3rd, 4th and 5th into the 4bie box (these 3 are the same as the 1.9). Is this possible/how hard would it be?

This would give me the below speeds at 7,400rpm

62

98

133

169

209

I think that will be much more suited to motorsport than the standard ratios (considering most tarmac rallies here have a speed limit of 180kph as far as I'm aware)

Cam they are limited to 200kph for Targa.

Not all events. Dodson hit 260kph on the Ohakune 1000

^I stand corrected. Either way; I can't ever see myself hitting more than 200 in a N/A 4wd sedan.

The gearbox casing and diff housing are a pair. You can't mix and match. The diff has two different size bearings, unlike the 2wd which are both the same size. You can put what ever gears you want into the 4wd casing however. I've just had Adrian Wuillemin make me a box with the follow parts in a 2wd case to see if I like it. Then I'm going to swap it over in the 4wd case etc.

1st 3.25 (from a 1.6L GTi)

2nd 1.85

3rd 1.36

4th 1.069 (from GTi)

5th 0.81 (from Mi16x4)

cwp 4.43

In your case you'd change 5th to 0.86 from a GTi.

This may help:

Also, the Mi16x4 1st gear is 3.45:1, not 2.92:1 like an Mi16 or 1.9L GTi.

A bettet alternative is to use the whole 1.9L GTi gearset with a 4.75:1 cwp from Quaife. You need the lower 1st to the heavier car off the line.

Thanks for the info Peter, I'll check it out.

Unfortuantely I can't afford new CWP's. I'm looking to do this as I can get a 1.6 box for $100 and as I recently sold a Triumph g/box that I got given for $100 It's not really costing me anything

If I'm making a box out of a 4bie and a 1.6 would the best combo be:

4bie 1st

4bie 2nd

1.6 3rd

1.6 4th

1.6 5th

4bie diff?

Also, 4bie first is quite short already isn't it? If you have swapped it for a 3.25 from a 1.6, isn't that longer?

Cam - your going to be doing tarmac rally stuff or circuit racing?

I've always wondered weather it was better to run a longer first to be able to use it for hairpins (50kphish speeds) and run to something like 60-65kph vs have a shorter gear for getting off the line quick and then having issues around that speed.

I like the idea of Peter's #3 special:

Gear    Overall Ratio    km/h @ 7000
1        2.923            57
2        1.850            90
3        1.360            122
4        1.069            156
5        0.865            193
Diff    4.43

With the 7500 rpm limit it would give some nice speeds for each gear.

Gear    Overall Ratio    km/h @ 7500
1        2.923            61
2        1.850            97
3        1.360            131
4        1.069            167
5        0.865            206
Diff    4.43

Tarmac mostly

I'm limited by what I can make out of the standard box and one other. At the moment it looks like the other box will be a 1.6 so I could go to from 3.45 to 3.25 but not up to 2.923

Also, you're car is MUCH lighter than mine Heath so not sure if the long first will be good for me.

I quite like the 3.25 in an Mi16 over the 2.92 1st gear. In an 8V 205 it feels too wide, but in an Mi16 it feels much better, getting the car off the line easily, without having to slip the clutch. The gap from 3.45 to 1.85 in an Mi16x4 is just stupidly too wide for my liking.

Could you use a BE3/6 and make a franken box out of other BE's for a proper 6 spd close ratio?

No, the BE3/6 is an orphan I'm afraid. You can't even buy a lower cwp for it. Well I haven't found one. If you want a really close ratio box, buy a set of Quaife BE3 ratios.

you can buy gear kits for the be3/4-6, and I have seen a 6 speed gearset grafter into a 4x4 casing.

4.05, 4.1, 4.4, 4.5, 4.75, 5.23, 5.66!!

from what I understand they also do the 6 speed kits for the 5 speed casings.

^Awesome. Was just a thought. Will just make a frankenbox for now.

I thought it was a great idea too, and armed with that ammo, I've gone and bought a 6 spd box with the aim of fitting it into the Mi16x4 casing, along with a 4.75:1 cwp.

We should keep hold of this thread or sticky one with just the info we've hashed out. Would be good for future reference
