Car Seemed To Loose Power Then Accelerate With Foot Off Throttle

Recommended Posts

flipperthebushkangaroo

As title really does anyone have any ideas, firstly my wife had the following while driving home,

Car shuddered and "POPPED", surged and a plume of blue smoke came out of the exaust. switched off and then drove as normal for about 40 miles with planned 2 stops.

Then i went out later and drove for about 15/20 miles when it briefly lost power then seemed to accellerate even with my foot off the throttle, stamped on the brakes which seemed to stop that. (no it does not have cruise control). the car then had the amber engine management light on for the last remaining 5 or so miles home. Shut off the engine and ignition, put ignition on again no warning lights attempted to start but turned over quite slowly so i gave up!!!

Has anyone got any ideas before i take it into the garage?

Any ideas greatfully received

Roddie

Ideally you want to get it plugged into Peugeot Planet to do a global scan & see if anything is playing up that isn't showing by leaving the MIL on.

It could be one of several things such as a TPS or MAF.

Have you started the car again since & did the MIL stay off?

check the oil level, may be the first signs of a dead turbo and it starting to run on.

Yup, that was my first thought too - blue smoke and engine accelerating without throttle sounds like it's trying to run on its own oil, likely from a failed turbo seal but there's other possibilities too (rings etc).

If it is that, you really need to stop using the car and get it looked at ASAP - have a look on Youtube for "runaway diesel" if you want to see what happens if you ignore it and don't/can't stall it when it starts to run away (switching the ignition off won't do anything)...

As ever gents, thank you very much for your advice.

Well have had a call from peugeot today, seems you were correct, one of the injectors has been pumping excess diesel, which has ended up in the oil, this has in turn contaminated the oil, destroyed the turbo and unfortunatly the engine as well :(

Anyone fancy a laugh?

To replace the engine.............Wait for it................£ 6249.0 (£ 5805.36 to us as vaued customers!!)

They value the car at £1900 before the engine went POP Scrap value only now.

Such is my confidence in peugeot i will be getting a local mechanic who has recently been recomended to me to give a second opinion!!Might be worth sticking an engine in from a scrapyard, but will have to get rid now as my wife has lost confidence in it.

Thanks again

Roddie

PS... really really wish i had got the 205 sorted out now, its nowhere near running yet

I would be quite surprised if it was totally scrap, however if the wife has been driving who knows

they are decent cars however, I'd hang fire till you get a concrete diagnosis of the fault, another engine wont be hard to find if required,.

 I'm not from round here though have been in the area for nearly 15 years!

personally I would replace the dodgy injector, give it an oil change and see what happens

The peugeot stealer said when they turned the engine by hand they found a tight spot, Not sure how conclusive that is?

very difficult to say, if the injectors were still in it could be a cylinder full of diesel from the broken injector, worst case is a bent crank though.

sorry to keep asking daft questions, but does anyone know if the 110BHP and the 136 BHP engines are different or is it just a mapping excercise?

Mine is a 136 but would a 110 work in the car?

the 90 and 110 engines are 2.0 8 valve, the 136 is a 16 valve.

there's also 110 bhp 1.6's.

Ah bugger, would the 8 valve engine work in the 16 valve car? or are the heads interchangeable?

you could drop one in no problem, but it would be a fair amount of work, should be plug and play but I couldn't say how much would be the same.

heads can be swapped, but pistons are different.

expert vans used them in lower power tune btw, as did the scudo and dispatch.

I would not try to mess about fitting a different engine, it will almost certainly be more hassle than it is worth. If it does need a motor then hold out for the right one.

what car are we talking about here? i couldn't see it in the post?

Why would they engine need to be replaced? it runs does it not? drain the oil out, put in the correct amount of oil, if it runs then the engine is fine and youll just need a new injector.

They may have priced you up a new engine due to the fact they will have trouble getting the injector out, but there is company's about that have hydraulic machines to pull them out.
