205 Gti6 Insurance

Have done some online quotes for insurance, but due to the engine conversion, most companies won't quote, or need more details. So I am alloting a couple of hours from my Saturday morning to ring around and see who can give me a good deal.

 

I have had a nosey through this site at what companies people are using.

 

The main contenders seem to be Footman James and HIC. I also noticed by checking peoples profiles that most quotes mentioned are from the 30yr old+ members.

 

I've asked Paul, and Ali who are younger members with the conversion, and they have come back with premiums that make my eyes water.

 

Footman James seem to have very good feedback, and their site states 25+, yet after having a browse online they seem to insure younger if they are with a club. I will see how I get on with them. Ironically I am 25 in March, and was going to wait until then to get it on the road, but there is a car show sponsored by Footman themselves which I am determined to take the 205 to! (which I need insurance to do). So if they refuse to insure, and pester me at the show I will lash out :lol:

 

Flux comes up again in conversation, but I was with them for years, and really didn't feel comfortable with them. They didn't really offer the right packages for what I wanted. They wouldn't protect my no claims for example. So I paid £11 more and went with Admiral this renewal.

 

I tried Admiral for multicar, and they won't enterain anything with a different engine.

 

So my priority list for Saturday morning to ring is currently

 

Footman James

HIC

Adrian Flux

Lancaster?

 

I only want 3k miles usuage at a guess, 2k would probably suffice if I can go that low.

 

So, younger members with engine conversions, who do you use for your classic policy?

heritage modern classic policy. £150 fully comp agreed value all declared. but that was 1500 miles and im over 30, plus it cant be your main car

I was with Footman James when I was 25-26, also been with direct line for 8 years! Though not with an engine swapped 205.

 

Currently with LV through Flux.

I'm currently with LV through Brentacre, and i have been very impressed with their service, knowledge of modified cars and the prices. Definetly worth a call, i'd say.

Wouldn't £500 be quite reasonable for a 24 year old with 205 GTi-6 given how much premiums have risen in the past couple of years? :unsure:

I'm 23 paying just over £500 for an Mi16 converted 1.9 GTi with HIC. Thats on a 3000 miles per year limit Classic Car Policy

For the hassle I have gone through getting to this stage, I will have to pay whatever it costs, but in my Mind, 800 is really the max I want to pay. My 535i Sport was that, and the Cup is £600. So it would pain me to pay any more for something for the weekend.

 

Sport1901966, That sounds reasonable :) I am in a good post code, so fingers crossed. Clean licence? Is that with your NCB used/it being your main car?

I was with flux when I still had mine, it was an awkward one as I just declared it on the modification sheets you get to fill in when I upgraded from the 1.9 lump.

 

I did tell them on the phone and this is what they told me to do, the price didn't go up either!

 

I never questioned it, and I just renewed it without them asking anything else!

 

I seem to remember paying about £600 a year, about age 21

3 points that are 4 years old, effectively no NCB as it is ignored because its a classic car policy, however they applied to my daily car anyway.

I appreciate that is probably jest. But I would much rather cover myself and pay the extra and declare, than pay the lesser amount for 1.9 insurance, which would effectively not be worth the paper it is written on in the event of an accident.

 

There are conversions on here that aren't registered on the V5, and probably not insured which I persnoally look down upon, but I don't want to be another of those.

Given the farce of the DVLA I am sure there are lots of cars out there with different engine details compared to the log book. But in reality what is the consequence of this, not really much in my opinion.

 

Insurance however is far more important. I have sent the insurance company full A4 written lists of the mods applied to my cars.

make sure you get it on a classic policy and you should get it for well under £500. im with footman james limited to 3k a year with declared gti6 conversion and pay £210 i think but i was 30 when i took the policy out. im sure they will cover you as your 25 in march. they were very helpful on the phone, the guy i was talking to even started chatting to me about my car :)

I insure my gti6'd 205 with adrian flux for £600 fully comp and unlimited mileage. I'm 24. It was £450 with 3000 miles/year but I drive it every day.

I just wouldn't risk it for what it takes to sort. It would be my luck if I didn't have it down as a 1998cc that the insurance company would say "Sorry the car is insured as a 1998, yet states 1905cc on the log book so you are insuring it as somthing it 'isnt' "

 

It's a bit like address' on V5's. It is actually an offence to move and have your old address left on. I was stopped after I moved out from my parents, and they said even though any correspondance would still get back to me, it is an offence.

 

I don't want to give them any reason to invalidate my insurance. Ultimately people can make their own choice about it, but I think it is worth doing.

Completely agree with this, i always tell me insurer the exact details of all mods but have never bothered to change a V5, largely because the less you can have to do with the DVLA the better. Everytime i have had to change an address they have always managed to f*** it up somehow, whether it be spelling everything wrong, changing the spelling of my name for no reason at all (despite numerous forms and letters to the contrary), or just generally making a hash of the new details; f*** knows what mess they would make of changing engine details/numbers!

Did you phone them? I found they will give you the classic policy if your under 25 but only if you phone. Not on the internet. Don't know why?

Yeah i spent a few hours ringing around, as soon as i mentioned 22 they didn't want to know.. got a good quote with Tesco's though! about £800 cheaper than online quotes lol.

Well some interesting variation in prices.

 

Footman James said they can quote for under 25s dependant on vehicle and modifications. They couldn't insure me now due to the engine swap, yet the operator put my birthday in today to make me 25 and it came back as 126.26! FC with uk and European breakdown cover. I think there must have been a mix up somewhere :D

 

Then flux quoted me 545 FC.

 

HIC quoted 450FC on a classic policy with 3rd party cover to drive other vehicles, added my 22 yr old partner as an additional, monetry 'replacements' for brakes, engine etc. And I can have an agreed valuation with 6 pictures.

 

Heritage were engaged all day, so will try Monday but otherwise it will be HIC. They seem to get good reviews as far as I can see, more than Adrian Flux that's for sure!
