Could This Be The Rear Beam?

Recommended Posts

Guest chrismk

Hi All

I have a 1990 1.6 gti which i only use on weekends etc. over the last couple of weeks i've noticed a knocking noise from the rear of the car. it's not the sort of knock you get when a bush has failed it sounds more like something hitting the boot floor.

it wont do it all the time but for example it may do it a couple of times on a bumpy road or when going over a pot hole or something, and at other times it may do it a 10mph on a relatively smooth road. today i also noticed a creaking sound when going round a roundabout. i have looked and cant find anything obvious. could it be the rear beam? any ideas on what to check and look for would be a big help

Thanks

the knock is almost certainly the rearmost beam mounts . they are a square rubber 'sandwich' and commonly come adrift. replace in pairs . the creak could possibly be the beam bearings . if you are unsure of the condition of the rear beam and intend keeping the car then get it apart asap . a winter will almost certainly turn a beam that is salvageable into scrap metal.

its true that no beam isnt repairable , but for the most of us its usually cheaper and easier to source another beam once they have eaten themselves

regards, Allan

Thanks for your answer, as i intend on keeping the car for years i will look into getting the rear beam refurbished.

Never done one before so i will probablly get someone else to do it for me.

Can anyone recommend someone to me, i live in Milton Keynes and what do you reckon the cost would be??

Thanks

It does sound like it's beam rebuild time.

Anthony on here is the beam guru just pm him as for cost it all depends on what needs replacing.

if you look at the rear of the car from a distance any obvious negative camber (usually one side more than the other) is a good sign that it needs repair.

in your case with no history of the beam and the intention of keeping the car you will not be throwing money away whether its shot or not .
