Leaded Or Unleaded?

Recommended Posts

Guest STi8 PPP

I have just bought a 205 1.9 GTi as a toy. It is a 1989 model (registered in October) and I need to establish what fuel I should be using. It does not have a cat. fitted, but that does not mean to say that it should have

There seems to be various types of the XU9 engine and even the Haynes manual was a little confusing and the main dealer was totally useless.

Chassis #: VF320CD622304381K

Engine #: 1CW2P001491

You can use either but most of us here us Optimax.

The 1.9 likes 97+ octane you see, if you run it on 95 you'll have to adjust the timing and it will then perform as good as a 1.6!

Thanks Simes

Filled it up with Optimax to get it home (cos that's what I use in the Scoobs), then just got that horrible sinking feeling

You shouldn't have felt that anyway, because you couldn't have gone wrong putting optimax in! Which is what it will run best on anyway.

If you can find a leaded petrol station near you Id suggest putting some in, it adds a little bite to the cars acceleration. do a search for 4 star on google to find relative sites that'll give you directions to your nearist stockist.

I can't see why it would though? 4 Star us 97RON and Optimax is around 98RON.

They do run better on Optimax, but it costs.

My last 30 quid of Optimax gave me 160 miles :( Mind you that was when I was late coming to see you Tony and doing 130 on the M62 :)

You have to pick your fuel and stick to it because of the distributer controlled ignition timing.

If changing fuel then you NEED to change the timing to suit. When buying a car I'd recommend everyone to check the timing is set properly as it is a quick way to loose power (and some fuel economy).
