French 1300 Rallye Engine

Recommended Posts

andychalmers

I have a original French Rallye TU 1300 cc engine (1293 ish actually) not a 106 engine. Im guaging interest in selling it. I have owned for a long time but will probably never use again. It came out of my rally car when I bought it. I only ran it a few miles before changing but ran well without any smoke & good oil pressure. I only changed as have to run a certain engine, not this 1. It has twin carbs fitted but not the original ones, also a paddle clutch. As far as I know it was re-built not long before I bought the whole car, I was informed it revved like no other pug engine and had pocketed pistons. As to the spec I think its standard.

I dont know alot about these engines so if anyone has any information please feel free to comment. As for a price I have no idea what its worth, so please feel free to comment. All I know is there like rocking horse dung to find & go very well for a 1300. I will find out all the engine & carbs numbers etc shortly.

Anything you can comment on this engine would be great.

Cheers Andy

When I first started looking into these, a few years back a brand new one, still on its pallet, went for £500.00 on eBay - I can only presume this was without carbs, but still sounds like a steal!

The problem you may well have is, people will no doubt take great pleasure in commenting that their 106 Rallye engine is just as good. Or even that their the 205 XS / 106 XSI hybrid engine is even better.

Saying that, if you find someone who appreciates the authenticity of your engine, it may well fetch a fair whack.

Being a TU24 owner I know how good these are and I would love to have a spare! The last one I bought from the stealers was approx £1000 plus the VAT in 1999, minus carbs, dizzy etc. E Bay France has them for 500euros but they're in France. Whole cars in average to good cond go for approx £1,500.

its a fairly narrow market for them in the UK. there aren't many owners on the forum who have a left hand drive rallye... or people who want to build a 1400 class rally car/ sprint car.

they are a very odd engine. the specs for them correspond to no other TU engine. theres no disputing that theyre an absolutely amazing engine, but like johnnygoodhand says 106 rallye engines are cheaper and easier to find and cheaper to rebuild and have just as much power..

too many times have i been tempted to bomb over to france for a weekend and buy a complete car outright!

I know someone who has bought two off ebay from the South of France, EasyJet £25, filled the car up with wine and driven them back!

I did a sprint at Elvington in mine 3 weeks ago and now its mapped right it beat all the 106Rallyes and evrything roadgoing up to 2 litre......

Bren, I must get in touch re the airbox if you've still got a spare one?

1294cc ....Put it back in the car, where it should be

I agree with the other guys. I think it's almost like a tall story on here, hence the comparisons with other TU's

Most people haven't driven or seen a Rallye before so it will be hard to get a decent price on the value of the engine alone.

Sure people get sick of hearing me babble on about them :) Simply the best production 205 ever.

I've driven mine for 4 years now and am lucky enough to be having 2 and a half spare engines in the basement :( Missus thinks I'm mental..at least I have sold the spare rallye now

I don't know the price but I'm sure it will appear on the for sale section of the forum. I will give you a heads up on the TU section when I know.

What would people think is a fair asking price for this engine?

Its in good running order with a pair of DCOE 40mm down draft carbs, also paddle clutch.

Thanks

Further to the one I mentioned before, I also remember watching one (well, it was some sort of frankenstein TU24) on eBay, freshly rebuilt, complete with carbs, around 2 years ago. It was suddenly removed from eBay and when I asked the seller the reason for this, he said he'd been offered £750 and immeditely removed it.

I'vw checked the engine out. It has fitted with linkages etc a matched pair (matching serial numbers +1) of Webber 40mm DCNF carbs not DCOE's. Pipercross filters. Custom inlet manifold. Solid bottom mount. 4 paddle AP Paddle clutch.

Engine numbers badges are 1F SOT 107135, M2A PTC. Head number is 96 031 298 dated 4/7/89

It has 2mm wide valves & has no injector holes in the head.

Can someone confirm this is a pukka french 205 rallye engine please as im pretty sure it is but dont want to sell it as a fake. Also guestamations on what its worth. Many thanks.

M2A is the code for the TU24 yes, but the DCNF's don't sound quite right, I though these came with DCOM's - Although what with Pugs reputation for putting on whatever they had lying about could explain it. The airfilter sounds aftermarket as these were fitted with an airbox from the factory with a remote filter box to the side of the engine. Clutch is aftermarket too.

Pictures!!!!!

As Ross pretty much says.

The rallye only ever came with weber 40 DCOM's with 34mm chokes. So those you have were added afterwards. The AX sport came with Solex carbs and 32mm chokes so it is also possible that this is an AX sport engine. The AX sport also come with another type of inlet manifold due to the tight space in the engine bay.

The engine code is fine. But you need to post pics of the head for us to confirm.

The paddle clutch and lower mount are of course also custom

Is there a gearbox too?

Andy, what was the car you took it out of? I sold a Tuned TU24 engine in a red 205 XS a few years back to a lad near yorks, just wondering whether it's done the rounds and come to you?

I'd be interested in seeing pics of it and possibly having it back if it is the one I built. Although if not I could tell you all about it!

Graham
