Worth Fitting Twin Carbs?

Recommended Posts

Guest spaghettifufanu

Hello all ,

Ive got a yellow uk spec 205 , and when I bought it , it came with a newly rebuilt carb ( Solex I think which are fitted standard ) .

So in total I have 2 of these carbs . From reading on here , most of you think the UK Rallye engine , isnt that good , so I was wondering if got a twin carb manifold , and run the 2 solex carbs on it , would I see any worthwhile gains ?

Thanks alot . J

the solex is a downdraught carburettor...im 99.999999999% certain that there isnt a manifold out there that allows you to bolt two solex downdraught carbs to it.

either way it would be pointless as you's only have two barrells feeding 4 cylinders. better to get yourself a pair of weber sidedraught carburettors and an inlet manifold from somewhere like TI motorsport.

Ok thanks , Ok if I got twin webers , would I notice a decent increase on the Uk spec engine ?

On a totally different idea altogether which is the easiest engine swap into a UK spec Rallye ?

I think a lot of people have put 106 16v engines into them, as they are TUs.

Is swapping an Mi16 engine an easy swap to do ?

Not sure in the 'base model' shells. I dont kow what the front suspension setp on the rallye is, If its not a GTi setup than you will need to fit it, as with drive shafts/hubs etc. But the engine will drop in on std pug mounts.

Wouldn't be overly difficult than a normal conversion, only that you'd need injection parts, ie. a fuel tank & pump etc, bigger fuel lines etc.

And to either mod the gearpost or fit a gti subframe.

The XU 16v conversion is no more involved than a TU 16v and yeilds a better car IMO, certainly a better gearbox!

I agree the MA tu box isn't the best. However the age of the engines is quite different and i think you would pick up a better condition TU (106gti/vtsengine)for less money than picking up an XU 16v (mi16). Or would you still go XU ?

Is there any other type or make of carb that would improve performance and fit directly onto the 1360cc Rallye engine ?

One of the first things I came across when looking for more power out of my Rallye was the 'MG Meastro Carb' mod.

Not sure how popular this upgrade really is and I've never seen it mentioned on these pages, but there's a bit about it here: http://pages.zoom.co.uk/rossd/modifications.htm

i think twin weber / dellorto 40 / 45's should fit with the correct inlet manifold

They will, but it's not a particularly cheap modification. But if you do go this route, manifolds can be bought from TI Motorsport

Didn't Macaroni have one on his motor. His was off a Ford 2lt lump of some description IIRC. It is almost a straight swap (a couple of the mounting holes need elongating) but they are a pig to jet properly as the gas speeds are too low at low revs. Overall not much of an improvement over a well set up Solex.
